What's your stand on hunting?

-----------

I personally am repulsed by it. My house is next to state Game lands and I hear people shooting all the time. In our newspaper today, they were talking about a guy who was returning after a 3 year ban for shooting a bear without a tag. He shot and 808 pound bear (complete with pictures which where ghastly), then realized he did it illegally so he left to go get a tag, and came back. Eventually, officials found out and he was banned for 3 years. They were referring to the bear as a "trophy", which sickened me. :sad2:

ETA : Alexis brought up a good point. I support it as a food source, but not as a game.

I do not believe in hunting as a sport. I dont care if we have to hunt to balance the population, killing an animal for fun is sick.
I am for hunting if it is to eat, such as how in some areas, they hunt and cook there own food. I'm find with that. But as a game or sport? Absolutely not.

For food its ok...even though that type of meat is nasty, I mean I would much rather eat vegetables(and I hate vegetables...lol.jk). For sport it is messed up.

I can understand if you're going to kill the animal and eat it, but if you're just going to kill it for fun I think you should be hung by your flippin toe nails. lol

I can support hunting as a food source, and possibly population control should it ever get way too out of hand, but not as sport.
And population control would have to have a lot of restrictions.

Oh, but I don't believe in unnecessary killing for food either, but I'm just weird. (i.e.- I never have, never will eat deer or rabbit.. or veal.. or foie gras -but those are different xD)

Biggest culture shock from moving to the midwest: the local paper having a picture of a 12 year old (girl or boy) holding up their first deer killed. Every hunting season.
^Kinda sickens me.

For food or population control, I think its fine. But not for just sport. My *possible future boyfriend* hunts, but they actually eat what they catch sometimes. And he barely ever kills anything either. He usually misses. XD But I don't think that I will ever hunt, or eat anything that someone has just killed.

its necessary.

i'm also terribly disgusted by people who are opposed to native hunting practices. (whaling, seal hunt, etc)

Can I ask why? And it's necessary to kill animals to get rid of stress? I understand it's necessary for a food source, but it is NOT acceptable as a stress releaser.

who said anything about stress?

hunting, done properly, is a necessity to the survival of the animal species.

You wrote that it's necessary. I wrote that I understood it's necessary for food, but why is it necessary as a sport?

I will just lose everyone's respect by saying that I have taken part in hunts. Fox-hunting is a sport amongst horse-riders that was actually banned a few years back, pretty explanatory loads of people on horses chase and kill a fox with hounds. It's all drag hunting these days, though loopholes do allow you to kill a fox you may accidently meet with a gun but the death must be quick and as humane as possible. I'm not really too sure on the whole law thing mind so don't take my word for it. As a part of the field it was more about galloping and jumping (and remembering your manners concerning the huntsman -_-) so you didn't see the fox at all most of the time. I don't know what happened to the many foxes we caught, but I must say I can't stand the thought of the poor innocent creatures (even though they're regarded as vermin) being chased by a pack of hounds and killed and for what? Nothing. I guess that's a different type of hunting to what y'all meant but it's the only one I know anything about really xD
I don't agree with needlessly killing animals for trophies, if they're needed as food I can tolerate it but otherwise I fail to see how someone could possibly want to partake in such a cruel sport.

thinning the herd is necessary. the death of x amount of animals is necessary.

anyone who says otherwise doesn't understand simple biology.

the reason behind which the animals are killed is irrelevant.

but for animals to survive, as a whole, the food chain must be maintained, and we must continue to hunt. otherwise all the established balances are thrown off.

i'm not pro sport kills or pro poaching (poaching is the opposite of thinning the herd)

i'm for killing the animals that need to be quelled from the pack and using them in a respectful way.

i have alaskan mukluks that are made with the pelts of three different animals. those animals were hunted, killed, skinned, and eaten. to waste the fur would be to waste the animal.

hunting is necessary. you can whine and complain all you want, but if we stop quelling the pack, the entire species will die.

Okay, and I understand it. The way you phrased it, you think hunting is okay as a sport just because. I don't understand why you seem to come off so snippy?

I dont think it is ok for population control either...because that is pretty much what china was doing with actual humans

Why we are both God Made Living Creatures...and if you didnt know we pretty much stole their land and they would be perfectly fine then.

i never shared my thoughts over hunting. i didn't say if i agree or disagree. i said that the death of x amount of animals every season is necessary.

I feel that this thread is getting a little tense. :/

I'll never support it as a sport. It'd disgusting. All creatures are equal, to me anyway. I get the population control thing, but humans are overpopulating as well.

I love this quote.

"The soul is the same in all living creatures, although the body of each is different." - Hippocrates
