Hummus. What is it good for?

I've always thought of hummus as the pasty but untasty "dip" my vegetarian friends were always urging me to try. I've never liked it. However, the three layer hummus torte at Trader Joe's caught my attention and in an effort to be more healthy, I bought it. Guess what? I love it!! I've tried it on baked pita chips and on a wrap, but what else can you use hummus for? :confused3

All you hummus lovers out there, can you share your recipe ideas? How can I incorporate it into my formerly meat and potato kind of diet?

Hummus makes a good sandwich spread. The Lighthouse Sandwich at Columbia Harbor House in MK is made with hummus and brocolli slaw. DD and I ate there twice our last trip and tried to duplicate the sandwich when we got home.

DH dips his carrots in it. I like it on the baked pretzel chips from Costco. My DD eats it straight out of the container, she skips dipping utensils and goes right in with a finger.

Like your vegetarian friends, I use it as a dip for carrots and broccoli florettes, or pita chips.
Other than as a sandwich spread, I haven't used it any other way, to be honest.

I never thought to put it on a sandwich, good thread!

Am I the only one who read the thread title and thought: "Hummus. HUH! What it is good for? Absolutely nothin'" :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

(Not true, actually, I love hummus.. great with pitas, on sandwiches, dipped with carrots, cukes, etc..)

I love that sandwich and it's now on my "must have" list for every WDW trip!! I also like hummus and tabbouleh sandwiches: warm up a whole wheat pita, open up the pita and spread some hummus on one side and add a layer of tabbouleh on top of the hummus. Delicious!

I love it on a turkey sandwich instead of mayo.,.There are tons of different flavors of it too..

I am so sorry, this is completely OT.

As soon as I saw the thread title, I started singing in my head

hum MUS! What is it good for!
Absolutly nothing!
Say it again...

Yet again I need my eyes examined...I read that as "she skinny dips utensils and..." well, nevermind.

I like hummus, but need to get get off the DIS for awhile. :rotfl:

Yipes! She's not into the running around naked phase yet, so I think we're still safe on the skinny dipping thing!

Now double dipping, that's another story.

And not all that bad in the caloric end of things....

Hummus 1/2 cup (4.5oz) = 220 calories, 4.5 grams of fat and 23 carbs!!!

So if you are putting it on a sandwich or find you love it and are dipping into it more than you should...not a bad breakdown.

:yay: :dance3: :yay: :dance3:

:lmao: That's exactly what was going through my head!! Oh great now I'm gonna hear that in my head all afternoon!!

I never thought of hummus on a sandwich, sounds yummy. We usually just eat it with crackers or baked chips. I like the one with eggplant

My dd loves it!! I think it's the only "veggie" that she'll eat :cool1:

She also will totally skip utensils and ask for just one cracker...she uses that cracker to dip over and over and over again.

Okay, I'm glad some people got my song reference. I did have the song in my head when I posted. I'm glad I'm not the only corny one here. :goodvibes Thanks for all the suggestions. I will try it on a sandwich in place of mayo, which I don't like anyway.

I love hummus! I make a wrap with it. I use a whole wheat wrap of some kind, there is the round kind and BJ's and Costco have a square one as well. Then I spread a thin layer of hummus on it then put mashed avocado and chopped tomatoes. I mash up the avocado with a little lemon juice and salt. I have found that the regular hummus at BJ's has a lot of fiber in each serving, a smaller package I got at the grocery store didn't have as much. :confused3 Not sure why. And Costco has a roasted garlic one that is so good.

I got your song reference but forgot to say something. I'm singing that song in my head now.
I'm attempting to put something else in my head.... :sunny:

It's a natural and healthy alternative to grout for your bathroom tile. :joker:
