HUGE ID Issue

I can’t reschedule the trip. The only reason we decided on a trip is because of our APs that were extended by Disney due to the closure. Our passes expire 11/1.

With Covid things are not operating normally. In all honesty while a good suggestion, I can’t imagine state representative assisting in expediting a passport fir a trip to Disney- if family emergency out of country yes, but a trip to Disney can’t see it being done but you might as well call.

How long have you known about the trip? You’ve known for 17.5 years his age and that he’ll turn 18 10/23/2020. Adults need ID when they fly- that is all over. All news outlets talk about licensing issues, passport issues, etc. IMHO this is a you issue that was avoidable by getting ID months ago or researching more than 6 weeks prior to trip.

Your husbands suggestion of lying about age- TSA will probably flag him when he puts in different birthday next time. Not smart at all-

It’a understandable you want to do, but the whole thing is you created the issue. You should have researched months ago! Yes, sounds mean but it’s the fact. Are you willing to causes issues down the road for your son lying about his age, and what if some TSA agent asks for ID?

Even if you get walk-in appointment for license it says taking 4-6 weeks to get. If your son has flown previously his birthdate is already in the system!

Also you knew when AP expires.

The trip was just planned on a spur of the moment. As I mentioned, I naively thought it would be quicker to get his ID when I asked that posters be kind....I know things aren’t normal. I know I created the issue. Thanks. Very helpful.

We have scheduled flights....I have a son who is 17 and will turn 18 on October 21. We decided a couple of weeks ago to have a three day weekend trip October 29 through November 1. He has no picture ID.

He has been in no hurry to learn to drive. Our goal before the pandemic was for him to get his license this spring, but no place is really doing driver‘s ed since it doesn’t seem very safe to have a car full of people riding together. We finally gave up on using AAA for him to learn to drive and decided to do parent taught. We naïvely thought it would not be a huge long process. Now that we have started it, we realize that he can’t just get a license in a few weeks. Please be kind, as we really did not know anything about the parent taught and our plans were derailed because of the pandemic.

I decided a few days ago that we should give up and just decide to get him just a real ID at the drivers‘ license office. He and my husband went yesterday afternoon, taking in a slew of items, such as his Social Security card, his birth certificate, a report card, and a utility bill confirming our residence. So then my husband finds out that you have to have an appointment and the appointments are scheduled out until February. The only appointment that I can get him is on October 23 about an hour from here. Obviously getting his picture taken on October 23 will not be early enough for him to have a picture ID for our flight on October 29. We were told at Lone Field this summer that he would have to have ID after he is 18.

What do we do? DH thinks we should lie about his birthday and say he turns 18 in December. We don’t want to lie and can only imagine the trouble that could result from being caught, so that really is not an option. His high school doesn’t give out picture IDs.

Any ideas?

In our state (Ohio), when you renew your ID or get a new one, the BMV will give you a paper printout that you can use as ID until the actual laminated card comes in the mail. The printout shows the ID photo, signature, and all the information on the ID.

Never tried to use one to get through TSA, but it certainly couldn’t hurt as long as you took along all the other necessary documentation of his identity and left extra time for screening.

Our son told him he was 17 and had his student I'd to show he was a high schooler... they did not even look at it only looked at ours. The rules say they have to be flying with a adult companion..

That is something that I have wondered about. I can’t remember if the temporary one has a picture. I got mine renewed in January, but I have already forgotten since that seems like eight years ago....,

This is directly fro. TSA website. Have as much information with you and definitely arrive early for extra screening time.

As for passports, you still has to prove your identity and there and you need time to get that processed. A lot of offices government related were affected by covid and had to alter how operations are handled.

Forgot Your ID?
In the event you arrive at the airport without valid identification, because it is lost or at home, you may still be allowed to fly. The TSA officer may ask you to complete an identity verification process which includes collecting information such as your name, current address, and other personal information to confirm your identity. If your identity is confirmed, you will be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint. You will be subject to additional screening, to include a patdown and screening of carry-on property.

You will not be allowed to enter the security checkpoint if your identity cannot be
confirmed, you choose to not provide proper identification or you decline to cooperate with the identity verification process.

TSA recommends that you arrive at least two hours in advance of your flight time.

If your identity cannot be verified, you will not be allowed to enter the screening checkpoint.

And this is what DH is thinking....
It is a federal crime to lie to the TSA. It would be nuts to do something like that & risk the consequences just for a trip to Disney World. It would also teach a very poor lesson to your son, and would reduce his respect for his parents' integrity.

Since you can't postpone the trip, add two days to each end of the trip and drive. It's a drivable trip from Texas with one overnight stay at a motel.

Are you aware there could be consequences in the future for lying about his age now. Secondly it’s a horrible example to teach a child to lie to authorities!

Yep. I’m aware of both issues. As I mentioned in the original post, I don’t want to lie. As a Christian, who tries to do right, but often fails, I attempt to set a good example for my children. (Not saying that only Christians are moral!)

Hope your husband agrees -

I hope you get to go but maybe all this is a sign to wait and go. Maybe Tuesday call DMV or whatever Texas calls it and see about when walk in is offered

I work for the government and years ago my bag set off an alarm that required extra screening. 6 agents screened me for one issue and they flat out told me that if I didn't have my work ID on me, there was no way I was getting on the plane. Something is triggered now that when I fly I'm always given extra screening.

I did send an email to TSA to see what they suggest. I’m also going to stalk the DMV website to see if maybe they have some cancellations so that I can try to move his appointment closer. I would just try to be at the DMV at opening time since a PP quoted that they do have limited walk ups....but since DS is in school that won’t work. And we didn’t start planning this trip until after school started. I will call the DMV also on Tuesday to see if they have any suggestions.

I am also looking into the passport route as others have mentioned...

TSA will NOT accept a temporary paper DL as proof of identity. I flew 4 days after my last DL renewal. I had the temporary paper, but also I had my old license which the DMV had punched a hole through to mark it as invalid. TSA agent said it was a good thing I had the old license as they didn't accept just the paper version, but with both, it was fine.

Good to know....thanks!

Which airline is it? Almost all airlines are offering penalty-free flight changes right now. Your best bet is to reschedule the trip for a later date.

In the meantime, get your son a passport. That's the gold standard of ID and can be used for any type of flight or travel, as well as citizenship verification when getting a job, etc.

And pay the extra $30-35 for the passport card; that operates as a REAL-ID so that when it is necessary to use one for flying, he doesn't have to go try to get one through the state
