Just wondering if it worked out to be a good deal. Know nothing about digital camera and am not really up on the technology but would like to get one for the hubby for Christmas. It appears to be a good deal($199) if it works OK. Noticed it did not come with a dock - what is it and do I need one? Does it eat up the batteries? Many thanks for any help!!!

Which HP digital is it? and Yes, as a general rule Digi-cams eat up batteries. If you get any digital make sure to buy re-chargeable batteries and the charger.

The are a couple of good internet sites that review digitals:
www.dcresource.com and www.stevesdigicams.com.

Also, it depends on what you want to do with the camera (other than take pictures), how are you going to share them are you going to print them, what kind of PC you have, what are you going to photograph?

I paid a lot of money for a Sony digital camera with 5 mega pixels. I bought my parents a Sony that was a lot cheaper with 3.2 mega pixels. I wish I had bought the cheaper one too. I was only looking for snap shots and enlarging to 8X10 at the most, and 3.2 mp is good enough for that.:(

I don't have a docking station, and to be honest, I don't need one. It is so you can put your camera on it and down load to your pc. I just plug the cable in and it does the same thing....

Isn't it more expensive to print them at home? A friend suggested Sam's for printing from a memory card/stick for about .18 each! Paper and ink add up !!

What about optical zoom? How much for just snapping pics on vacation?

Thanks again!

I print my pictures at home. I am not at all comfortable leaving my memory somewhere. Plus, I don't print all the pictures I take, some I post on a web site and some I "burrn" onto CDs to look at. The main reason I got a digital in the first place was because I am horrible at getting film developed, it usually lays around for years, so this way I get the pictures off the camera memroy and put them on my computer.

Also, optical zoom is equivalent to a telephotos lens on a film camera, so a camera with 3x optical zoom will be roughly a 35mm lens to 105mm lens, the higher the optical zoom number (ex 5x or 6x) the greater rhe zoom will be. Alsom digital zoom is pretty worthless (at least IMHO).

The camera i use is an Olympus D550 it is a 3 MP with 2.8x optical zoom. It is good for taking vacation photos and takes excellent pictures, I have had it for a little over a year now and have taken many pictures with it. If you want to see some go to http://f2.pg.photos.yahoo.com/denise5374pa There are some there from last OCt. 02 Wonder cruise.

I hope this helps. If I can help anymore, please let me know.

I print my photos at Walmart. I sit in front of a computer for 40+ hours/wk, the last thing I want to do when I go home is look at a computer! I usually brun my pics onto a cd and then bring the cd to Walmart and print the photos there. Very easy and ready in an hour.

I would not buy a camera with out optical zoom, I like to get closer to things and I know I wouldn't be happy without it.

I love my digital, but it will never replace my Nikon N80 SLR.....

Thanks for your help with this. My friend basically gave me the same advice and it was reassuring to hear it again. She did say at Sam's you put your memeory card in a machine and pick the ones you want to print and edit them. I was under the impression you got your card back while waiting for the prints but will double check with her as that would be something to consider - leaving the memory card !!

Thanks!!

My husband is the technology wizard in this house, but I believe he always checks www.cnet.com and www.epinions.com to find out specifics about things before buying. They will have editors' ratings and customers' ratings.

I'll try to remember to ask him if there are other sites when he gets home. :)
