How would you approach a trip like this?

I decided to try and schedule a mini-trip for me and my soon-to-be-5 year old DD to celebrate our February birthdays. We're leaving in 16 days and we'll be spending 2 days at MK only.

I'm a planner, so after I crafted my excel spreadsheet for reservations/expenses, I started my plan of attack for MK. I figured out which rides she would like, and sorted them by location in the park. I was getting all anal about planning our route when it struck me. Should I just let her take the lead? I know she'll love everything in Fantasyland/Toontown, but I'm not sure how she'd handle some of the bigger rides. She's tall enough for most everything, I believe (45 inches).

The whole family is going back in December for a longer, more involved trip. We haven't been to WDW in almost 2 years. Last time we were there MK = ToonTown and Fantasyland. DH snuck in a few of the bigger rides, but I was pg with our son and couldn't partake. I'd love to try some new things and get some ideas for our December trip, especially on how to plan on using FP for a busier time of year.

Should our girls-only trip be a carefully orchestrated event or a more carefree experience?

I would go at it carefree and see what happens. I'm sure its much easier to tour the parks with one child than with multiple because you will be able to concentrate on just one person's wants and needs. Let her pick the rides in each section and take your time to walk around and see everything. Relax and just go with the flow. But while your strolling, scope out the neighborhood to plan your attack later in the year.

If you are planning on 2 days at the MK I would plan out the first day and then go with the flow the second day. By then you would have been on most everything and can go back to the rides and shows she wants to go on.

Have fun! T&B

I would plan the first morning (assuming your first day starts early), then relax after that. Not sure if your trip coincides with Presiden'ts day weekend - if not, you will be in great shape! If so, then you'll get the highlights done early and your DD will be in better position to choose what she wants to go back for..... and plan a character meal if you can! For lunch or dinner so you don't interfere with the morning hours.... Crystal Palace or Liberty Tree Tavern, or over to Contemporary for Chef Mickey's or Grand Floridian for 1900 Park Faire....... Have fun! What a great Birthday surprise!
