How would these be different?

I'm going to post a couple of pictures. They were all taken with my Kodak p&s 710 camera. Can you please try to explain to me what points would be different with a dslr? Trying to know exactly what "parts" of the picture to look for the differences in.

Here's one of the boys enjoying the baby's 1st birthday treat:

Here's one of my boys and their cousin at a recent wedding:

Thanks so much for any help/tips/advice. Again, all was done in "auto" on my p&s.

a lot would be what you were trying to accomplish..ie with the last 2 , you could have used a larger aperture to blur the background more and make the family stand out more...number 2 i am guessing you used an on camera flash which you could use an off camera flash and not have the white marks on the faces, kind of softer light, same with 1 not such a harsh shadow behind the older boy. ( love the green faces btw:rotfl: )
to me one of the biggest differences in a dslr and a point and shoot is the ability to play around with what you want to create( which is why it's hard to give you point by point here, depends on what you were trying to do) you have more options due to lenses, apertures, shutter speed than you do with a p & s, ie it could be hard to blur action or shoot really fast action or get really "creative" with dof etc with some P & s but if you want to take normal snapshot type photos( like these) you probably would be fine with a p&s.

In addition to what Jann said, you could have avoided using a flash altogether on one and two. If number three had been shot in RAW, you could have recovered some of the blown out sky and lake.

Even in full auto, you'll get little to no red-eye with a DSLR (faster photos and better eye color). Better Dynamic Range (more cloud detail), no shutter lag.

Also, if you look at your photo at 100% on the screen, you'll see a "watercolor" type affect. DSLR images will look much more natural in comparison.

My Pentax Optio isn't the greatest camera in the world, but here's a comparison of two 100% crops:

Pentax P&S 5MP:

Sigma 4.7MP (like-DSLR)

webshark3, I think you are the first real life DP1 user I have come across. How do you like it?

ukcatfan,

read the review on www.dpreview.com. I agree with most except their high ISO comments (It does better IMO), and the fact that they call it a "landscape" only camera. I think that their nice way of saying that if you need speed, go elsewhere. It is fast, but only in Manual Focus.

Then look at their forums for some of the most heated debates you'll ever see. :) Short Story: I love mine and wouldn't trade it for the world. Superior IQ in a small package. However, it's a "thinking camera". It WON'T take a good photo unless you know what your doing. Spend a lot of time in Av, or M and must shoot RAW. That said, I would not recommend it it 99% of the people here. But if you know how to use it, It produces the cleanest, smoothest, most impressive images right up to ISO 800. It may not be able to "top" a Lecia M8 or Canon 5D, but it definitely keeps them company.

I can't wait to to take it to Disney (I've posted here often about not wanting to bring a DSLR, but did not want to give up IQ). BUt it looks like we won't make it down this year.

Here's a few samples... Liek I said, can't wait to get it to Disney. Love that Dynamic Range.

I read that review, but I generally do not like Phil's take on everything. I am glad you like it. I hope this is the future of the p&s camera.
