How would a person get "Free Dining" if it comes out?

Hi,
Trying to decide a trip in May or August. We could do the possible free dining dates, have never stayed onsite before and am not sure how you would get free dining. Do I book now, is it a promo that will come out. Should I reinstate my Disney Visa? Are most eating spots in the parks covered? Can you buy anything on the menu or is it quite limited. Sorry for all the questions, but I have watched these threads for months and the "dining" intrigued me, especially after yesterday's post that it may come out.
Thanks so much.......

Hi, I'll try to answer your questions...

Stay onsite...you'll never stay offsite again...total immersion in Disney...fabulous.

You can't book the free dining promo until it is officially announced. Sometimes they offer it to Disney Visa card holders first, then the general public a few days later. There will be a code to call in...usually 3 letters...that you'll need to mention to get the dining. These boards will have it the SECOND it is released...lol.

I would say 90 percent of the eateries in WDW are covered...although some require 2 table service credits...they are usually the high end restaurants. But there are PLENTY of others to choose from.

Hope that helps...good luck!

Unfortunately the dates for August are slim. If the rumors are correct, the free dining will start for checkins beginning August 26 through September 22.

Just got back today 3/18...missing WDW and looking at the boards, dreaming of planning our next vacation...

We did the dining plan. As an adult, you can select anything that is on the menu; a child is supposed to order from the kid's menu.

A snack is most any menu item that is less than 4.00. These are clearly marked on all menus with a purple Disney Dining Plan logo. Snacks also include many items in the gift shop of your hotel. For instance, an 8 count box of Entemann's (spelling:confused3 ) counts as one snack credit:thumbsup2 . If you like donuts, for a fast breakfast, get them the night before and eat them with coffee in your room and be on your way for the day...

When you eat CS, you get an entree, a drink, and a dessert. It is a lot of food in most CS restaurants. You may feel too full for the dessert. Many desserts could be saved for a snack later, i.e. packaged brownies.

At TS, you get an appetizer, an entree, a drink, and dessert. It's a lot of food. There is generally not a limit on what menu item you can have. I know of one notable exception, because we ate in Japan at Teppanyaki, sushi is not covered under the dining plan.

The fun thing about the dining plan is that you have the freedom to eat whatever you want without looking at the prices. And if you order everything that you can with each meal, you will save money. Whether or not you actually would have ordered an appetizer for everyone at the table and dessert for everyone at the table, or whether you would have shared these, is another story. Even so, you would probably still save money...

Let me know if you have any other questions. Am full of current info and opinions from our trip.:rotfl:

As a Disney Visa holder, if free dining is offered to card holders first, how will I know (aside from coming to the boards)? Is there a way to sign up to be notified by email??

TIA
Julie

I hear ya - I"m worried about this too! We've had the Disney card for YEARS but can't recall being notified about free dining, so now that we are planning a trip for the time period I"m worried I won't get the card or email giving me the code.
I do know that you can check your account online and in the Disney rewards section there is "more info" link, and then a link to show "current offers". Right now there is pretty much NOTHING there. I would hope Chase would post the code there if/when it comes out.
