Hi!

I'm an avid Disney vet and have been over 15 times in my lifetime. However, April vacation I'm going with my hs band to Florida and am staying at all star sports whiles doing two days at Universal. Now I'm not asking for a total detailed summary but here are a few of my concerns:

1. How does universal immerse you in a themed enviorment compares to Disney?
2. How does citywalk stack up compared to downtown Disney?
3. How will it be touring with out fastpass (we're probably not getting express pass)

And overall how does a Uni experience stack up against Disney?

All input appreciated!

In all honestly, stop trying to compare and stack up the experience. They aren't supposed to be the same. Enjoy each for what they offer.

I hope you have a wonderful experience at Universal! :goodvibes

I appreciate the in put but I'm just curious what to expect. I guess what I should've said is ive been to Disney, Busch Gardens, and Six Flags before and all are good in their own seperate ways. Just kinda curious at what to expect

I love apples, going to try a banana, how will I like it? Everyone's tastes and likes are different. :thumbsup2

Just go and have a great time and DON'T compare the two while there.;)

i can tell you that the darkside is fun and has some unique rides and shows.

it has two parks only, so a lot smaller than the motherland.

there are main rides/attractions, shows, restaurants at both parks.

the Studios is based generally on movies.
they have a story line thru the regular line into the ride.

they have outdoor entertainment daily.
The Blues Brothers does shows daily..
check the park guide map for that.

also there is a street atmosphere of young men that do acrobatic and dance moves.

movie stars roam the section in the front by the Lucy Tribute.
Cartoon characters and the like do meet and greets throughout the day.

a couple of coaster rides also on this side.

new activity/show will start this summer at the Lagoon.

many places to sit and relax in the park.

IOA has parry hotter.
enough said about that.

the Marvel characters arrive in their land daily by riding in and then doing meet and greets.
spiderman ride, hulk, dr doom are all in that area.
it's a big hit with many of the guests.

water rides are at this park.
if you need to compare rides i guess the ride in toon town is similar to roaring rapids.

a couple of shows on this side too.
Sinbad is an acrobatic show which is entertaining.

the sets in the parks are remarkable.
a lot of detail and color goes into them.

ioa is circular. it has different islands.
you can enter one way and travel throughout the park and exit by going thru the loop.

food is good in the parks.
of course, some places are a lot better than some places but that would depend on the type of food you enjoy.

you can get some bargains in the park and at city walk.
if you have the AAA card, show it when you order food or buy merch.
you will receive 10% off the charges.
if you buy a refillable mug, all refills would be .89.
the mugs are valid for a lifetime.

i am still taking my dueling dragons mug with me on trips.

if you buy the butterbeer in the souvenier cup, that is also considered a refillable mug.

refills are for sodas.

there is a lot of detail in both parks.
if you rush through just to catch rides and shows, you will miss out on a lot.
take your time when you are in the parks.

go and have fun.
it will be a new adventure to you.

if you compare, you might not get a lot out of your park days there.

it is great not to have to take busses or drive a car to get from one park to the other.

Both Universal and Disney are masters of themed environments. They are both on an entirely different level than Busch Gardens, SeaWorld, and Six Flags. I'm sure a lot of the opinions on which one is better is simply a matter of taste and, of course, bias ;) IOA's themeing is absolutely beautiful. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is probably the most immaculately detailed and immersive environments ever created in a theme park. I also find Universal Studios' recreations of New York and Hollywood streets to be better and more realistic than Hollywood Studios.

Again, don't get caught up in the differences. I absolutely love Main Street and it's hard to beat that kind of magic. Disney, generally, has a much more nostalgic atmosphere, while Universal is more about being exciting and fun- with a focus on the rides.

CityWalk is somewhat similar to Downtown Disney West Side and Pleasure Island. Lots of clubs, restaurants, a movie theater and some stores. Again, I wouldn't get caught up in which one is better. They offer different experiences, so just enjoy what CityWalk has to offer :)

Have fun at Universal!!

Don't compare them..Universal is fabulous in its own right. It can be an absolutely wonderful time ..IF you let it.As for the theming, universal has its own theming and its immersive in its own right( again if you let it).As for express pass.Depending in when you are going in April ,will depend on how bad it will be without express pass.I will tell u if you are going anywhere near Easter ,you are going to be waiting in some long long lines so express pass may be worth the cost.As you know there is NO free version of this.

You will love it. As others said it is different from Disney but not inferior by any stretch. Universal is like Disney on steroids.....the rides are so much more intense! Disney does theming better but Universal wins for fun. Islands of Adventure is my favourite of the two parks (US vs IOA) but both are wonderful.

If you are looking for that welling up of emotion that I know I get whenever I enter Magic Kingdom, I don't think you'll find it here, but you WILL have a great time! For the first time, we are heading to Florida this summer and not doing any Disney but we are doing Universal again.....that should tell you something. Have fun!

Just back from Disney and Universal. Here's my observances.

IOA is a visual feast for the camera eyes. Dr. Seussland is so colorful, Marvel Island is very much like the comic books. Theming is wonderful in Harry Potter land.

Touring strategies; since there is no Fast Pass I find stand by lines (outside of Harry Potter) to be on average with each other. Meaning, in Disney I have to hit rope drop, certain fast pass rides, certain areas to be in to get ahead of the crowds. Here, one line is not significantly shorter than the other unless you have the express pass, so I'm not rushing. At US/IOA there's not that level of "anxiety/alertness/vigilance" whatever you call it that I have with Disney.

With Universal/IOA, I just head in one direction and go into a ride as I get to it. With Universal, I may consult the times the shows start, like in Hollywood Studios.

I only took notice of priority the thrill rides that don't have FOTL passes; Rip Roarin' Rocket, Forbidden Journey. Even that though limits what people can be on it. (My kids were shorter at the time so we bypassed those rides)

Don't need ADR's. My very first time I booked at the earliest window; 3 months out. That night I had dinner at RPR with Scooby Doo- and we were one of 3 families there. :rotfl:

City Walk.

Now, we were in Downtown Disney yesterday. Parking lot was full, we circled around. It's crowded. Now compare to the expanse of space in the pic above. Very different.

Disney and Universal WANT to be different. So, I enjoy different aspects of these parks.

Was considering IOA for my HP and Spiderman freaks but $600.00 is a lot for one day! Can I ask what place you can eat with Scooby Doo?

I think US and IOA have some rides that blow away anything at WDW: Spiderman, Terminator, Simpsons (haven't been to HP yet).

IMHO, the WDW environment is more all encompassing in that you generally don't see things in the park that detract from the "fantasy" of being in the park such as empty space. At Universal you sometimes do. But I don't let it bother me in any way.

I think the Hard Rock hotel is just as good if not better than any WDW deluxe resort. It may not be heavily themed but it is a superb hotel with excellent service. And the free Express Pass takes it over the top.

As everyone says, they two places are different and have different things to offer. We used to do only WDW until our first trip to Universal. The kids prefer going to Universal now.

$600.00 is a lot for one day!
All of the Orlando-area attractions are priced so that a single day is very expensive---be it Disney, Sea World, or Universal. We tend to separate our trips into "all Disney" trips, and "everything else" trips rather than trying to mix the two.

At the time we ate at the Royal Pacific Hotel. They have him on certain nights. There were 2 restaurants onsite, the Islands Dining Room and Jakes Island Bar. We were at the Islands Dining Room but Scooby Doo went between both us and Jakes. He came over multiple times and spent a lot of time with us. Enough times that DD drew a picture for him and when he came back she was showing it to him.

Universal is much like Disney in the respect that...THEY want you to stay ONSITE.It is not meant to be a budget, secondary themepark. The more/longer you stay the cheaper it is.A one day ticket to one of the Disney parks is equally expensive .

I have the advantage on not having been Disneyfied, so my opinion is unbiased in any way. Just came back from my split WDW/Universal (and IoA) vacation. It was our first time to any of these parks.

We loved all of it! We saved Harry Potter/Universal for last and were fully expecting it to be a letdown from WDW, but were pleasantly surprised at how much we loved it.

IMO, Downtown Disney is more like a glorified mall. Albeit a very nice and entertaining mall. Citywalk seemed more lively, exciting, visually stimulating and fun to us. YMMV.

No fireworks at Universal. They do them only for major holidays like July 4 and New Years Eve.

We were there for Universal Mardi Gras. We loved the parade. The floats were beautiful! But then again, we had a blast at MK's and DHS's afternoon parades (I will never again hear "I Just Want to Bang on the Drum All Day" without smiling) and the Electric Light parade at MK took our breath away. Edge goes to WDW, but props to Univ. for a tremendous, festive atmosphere (and tons of beads!).

We don't do water rides but if it's really hot, I hear that Universal's rides get you soaked. This is not for everyone (I'm like a cat - don't like to walk around wet and chafing). We save our getting wet for the hotel pool. Edge for us was RPH pool > POP. But really apples to oranges there. Both were fabulous.

IMO, no rides were better than Harry Potter Forbidden Journey, Spiderman, and the Simpsons. These rides were cutting edge technology, perfectly themed, humorous, thrilling and not too brief. They were incredibly fun, and we were fortunate enough to do all of them multiple times. The closest fun rides at WDW for us was Star Tours and Buzz Lightyear which we did three times each. I must add here that we are not coaster people. We only do virtual reality thrill rides. I thought Mission Space Green was nicely themed and all, but not so great. But DD refused to try Orange.

MK tugs at your heartstrings in a way that Universal just doesn't. But it's all good. We really pulled out all the stops and made the most of this vacation by doing all the parks, but you can't go wrong by going to Universal. Just have an open mind and if you can financially swing it, stay onsite or pay extra and get the Express passes. No waits for the best rides (HPFJ is exempt). If you stay onsite, you get early admission to IoA, which will be great for you to beeline over to HPFJ and Spiderman rides.

I'm a visual person and love the little details like landscaping and flowers. I thought Universal was very clean, extremely attractive and prettier than I expected. The shows can't be beat either. We loved the Beetlejuice Rock 'N Roll Review and the Animal Actors shows. The sets were really great too. At WDW, we loved Fantasmic, Philharmagic, American Idol, Monsters Inc. Laugh Factory, Turtle Talk with Crush, HoP, and the movie show at the American Pavilion and more. WDW > Universal for offering more shows. But Universal did a great job had lots of good music piped in all over the park (maybe just for Mardi Gras?, I don't know, but we enjoyed it).

We love them both too. Our first trip to UO we were disappointed because it wasn't Disney. You will have a better time if you don't go there expecting it to be Disney. It is not Disney.

We actually prefer UO now. Still like to spend one day at WDW, just pick a different park for each trip, but spend most of our time at UO. They are Universal trips for our family now, not Disney trips. It is quite expensive to go to WDW for just one day during our Universal trip, but we think it is worth it.

WDW more nostalgia for the times when our son was little, not very thrilling, but magical. UO more exciting atmosphere, and exciting rides.

WDW does parades and fireworks great, UO not so much, but that is not why we go to either park, so it doesn't matter to us.

Resorts all deluxe at UO, so all beautiful, but more $$$. Love the express pass at UO resorts, nothing to compare with at WDW resorts.

You should try it if you can, you just might find something else to love in Orlando!

Thanks everyone for all the great tips! I'll try to go into it Uni with an open mind and not compare it to Disney.

Quick question. I'm not sure where I'm going to eat really but I know my group talked about eating at bubba gump. I love forrest gump its my favorite movie so I was wondering if anyone had reviews pf what the restaurants like. Thanks!

We eat there quite a bit. The food is pretty good but can be a little more money than other places. Mainly due to the price of seafood.:thumbsup2
