My DFIL died earlier this year and I was going to drop a note to those that sent him a Christmas card to let them know he had died. I have no idea what to say!

Something along the line of : Thank-you for your card to DFIL, he died earlier this year after a year long battle with cancer...

Just letting you know, DFIL died earlier this year.

Not sure who these people even are, so I am just not sure what to say to them!

I bolded the parts that I would add. Sorry about your FIL and it is nice of you to notify people.

That's a tough one.

I'd probably say something like:

Our family received the lovely Christmas card you sent to my father-in-law, "First name Last name." I'm very sorry to tell you that "First name" passed away on "Date" after a year long battle with cancer. He lived a wonderful life full of loving friends such as yourselves and will be missed by all.

Then I'd add if there is a guest book or obituary on line. I also like the PP's line about how you're sure he appreciated their friendship.

I could be totally off-base, but that's something like what I'd send.

My condolences to your family. This Christmas must have been a tough one.

Thanks, I like what both of you said and will do a combination of them. Thanks for the kind words.

I think the PP gave you wise advice on what to include in the note.

I justed wanted to add that I thin it's wonderful you're sending notes. I've had former co-workers, etc. stop sending cards and always wondered what happened.

I think you've gotten good advice here. I might also include a copy of the obituary in the letter, particularly if it has recommendations for where remembrance donations can be sent. Some will want to do that.
