How to use value of expired tickets

I've read in the discussions that expired tickets retain their original dollar value. I was curious how you use an expired ticket to partially pay for a new ticket. Can it be done on-line or over the phone, or could it only be done on site? Can it only be done through Disney? Could it be used toward paying for a package, or only for another ticket?

I'm considering buying tickets through UT for an upcoming trip, but there is a chance we might not be able to go. I don't know if I would be able to use them before they expire. I know I wouldn't lose what I paid for them, I would just like to know more about how to convert the expired ticket to a new ticket. If it can only be done at WDW, I probably wouldn't buy the tickets now because I wouldn't be able to book fastpasses in advance. Has anyone had experience with this?

5. That would likely be the case, but again, nobody knows.
6. Nobody has, because we have yet to see any of these tickets expire. Earliest that happens is Jan. 1, 2019.
