how to use SW credits?

I have 90 in credits on southwest from flights this fall that went down in price. Looking to book a trip, how do I go about using them? And I know that in January you can't use them for anyone but who they were originally booked for, but does that mean flight booked, or flight taken? Won't be flying til April, but if I book in the next week or so, can I use them all for whomever?

I just did this a couple of days ago. My parents and I went on a trip this November and the price of the tickets went down by about $70 total. My mom flies to Salt Lake City at the beginning of every year to go to her eye doctor at the University so I knew we would use it for that.

When booking her flight there was a section that asked me if I was going to use a promotion code or flight credit. When I checked yes it asked me for the confirmation number from the flight we took in November and the name of one of the passengers. After it pulled up the information it asked me if I wanted to use the entire credit or just a portion of it.
