How to use DVC the first time?

Is there a primer on this?

We just bought and we know we will be travelling in October. Our details may change but I felt it would be best to take advantage of the 11mo window and book at our home resort.

What do I need to do? Just call? Do I specifically need to request ME service? How is this different from any other reservation?

I know many people book at home and then try to switch. I know it's a LONG shot, but I would love to try to switch at the 7 mo mark to one of the EPCOT hotels. When I do this, will they cancel my BLT before the book the other, so I may risk losing the room I have and not getting the one I want?

What are some key differences in booking DVC vs. regular ressies that I need to be aware of?

Call and they will guide you through it. They will ask you about ME and the dining plan. If you want to switch at 7 months, ask first if there is availability. I'm not sure if they can hold the original room while booking the second, it used to be they couldn't but that may have changed.
 
You will have to let them know if you want ME but you don't have to do that until much closer to your trip. That can even be done thru the member website.
 
For your first trip, you can call your sales guide and they will make arrangements for you.

As far as every other trip, you will call MS (or if you believe it) starting in January you'll do it online. As far as changing your reservations to one of the Epcot resorts at the 7 month mark, you will be able to call and check availability at 7 months. If it's available, you should be able to cancel your BL reservation and rebook immediately at one of the EC resorts.

As far as Magical Express goes, you can make those reservations online at the member website when you have your flight info. If you choose to add the Dining Plan, it must be added no later than 48 hours prior to check in. One note about the Dining Plan - you used to be able to pay for it when you checked in. Now, they require payment when you reserve it.
 

Just call the number on the back of your membership card and follow the prompts. Once your connected to a CM it will be smooth sailing. They will guide you through the process. You can register for ME painlessly online through the member website.
