I'm not sure exactly what ticket I'll purchase for my mother but she will be joining us in April x 8 days and likely October x 7-8 days. If I purchase a 7 day ticket before we can FP, when and how can I upgrade to an AP? She'll likely go in October so I want to get the most for our $$

She should use the ticket once to enter a theme park before doing the upgrade. Once the ticket has been used, go to any park ticket window or guest relations location and say you want to upgrade her ticket to an Annual Pass. If she is a member of your household, you can get DVC Member pricing on the AP (she needs to have a photo id with same address as yours).

The price you should be charged is the difference between the current gate price of the ticket she has and the price of the ticket/pass you are upgrading to.

erionm is describing "bridging" the ticket price, which may not be applicable depending on where you purchase the ticket. If you purchase the ticket from a third party, the advice holds true; enter the park once before upgrading and you'll be credited the current gate price towards your AP purchase. If you purchase directly from Disney, you'll be credited with the amount you paid, regardless if you enter the park first or not.

You must upgrade before the 14 day expiration from first use, and you have to have at least one day left on the daily pass to upgrade, you can't wait until October to do it, even if you didn't use all the days on your first trip.

Thanks ! Do you recommend i buy from Disney or does it matter?

Depending on how many park days and options, you can save money by purchasing from an authorized re-seller like Undercover Tourist (UT). If you sign up for the mousesavers.com emails (sent on the 15th of each month), there will be a special link to UT for an additional savings.

I believe I already get that! I'll check it out.
