How to tie awning down

This trip we are in a premium site and it's all concrete. Wondered if anyone had any ideas about keeping their awning from blowing away in the daytime storms. In the past we've gone in May and not worried about storms, but in June they blow up pretty fast and if we are at the parks that could be bad news. I have those awning flapper things that attach the fabric to the sides, but won't be able to stack it down now. Don't really want to put it away every day when we leave for the parks. Maybe I'm worred for nothing, but I've seen a few awnings in bad shape after a storm rolled by.

I have always used ratchet straps on the corners of our awning. In the ground, I use the screw type stakes like the ones people use to tie up dogs outside. I hook the strap to the stake using a spring (kind of like a trampoline spring...just smaller) so as to give it a little play when the wind blows. I lost an awning once in a storm so I'm really paranoid about loosing another. If I'm not going to be at the camper, I usually just roll it back up. I know it can be a pain, especially with awning lights, but it's better than having to replace another awning.

You maybe able to tie off to the base of a tree on each corner or as the person bove said use long enough rachet straps (home depot, lowes etc.)and the screw in or even the stake type ones to hold the bottom depending on how far you need to go to find something to tie off to worst case you will have to put it up and down each day good luck and post how you made out with your tie down project

When we have stayed on blacktop in the past I carried empty 6 Gal plastic gas cans and filled them with water when we got there then dumped them out for the trip home. Two per leg gives you almost 100 lbs of anchor per leg.

I bought the awning strap kit that uses the screw type anchors that go into the ground. It works well, but like the other poster said, I too just roll mine up when we are leaving to go to the parks, more so during the summer when the FL storms start creeping up.

I use the narrow (1.5" maybe) ratchet strap in, I think, a 15' length. You can find them at Wally World. I chose the bright red ones so folks will see it. When I can't use the 15" stakes I use the leveling jacks. The straps have 'S' hooks on both ends. One hook over the awning roller tube and the other attaches to the jack. So far no issues.

I was wondering the same thing. We have reservations for a full hookup site but had discused upgrading since the concrete would make it easier to position the cargo trailer. But to the question to someone who has stayed in the prefered sites. Is the dirt close enough to set the anchors for the awning? Closing the awning is not an option once I put it out it is staying until we leave.

Been there, done that. :sad2: DH willl NEVER leave the awning down again when we're away from our camper.

Hi there,

Was at FW over New Years, at at PEFERRED site, and then again over the next holiday in Jan in a PREMIUM, and had NO problem staking out my 21ft awning. There is enough soil on the edge of the concrete to get the stakes into and then attached the strap. ALWAYS secure the awning, and drop it down if leaving for any time.

I have taken 5 gallon buckets and filled them with water. Get those that stack inside of each other and then store stuff in them so that they don't take much room transporting them. For extra weight you could put large free weights in the bucket so that the weight is more than 40 pounds. If you keep the awning tight so that it doesn't turn into a sail, you should be fine.
