So we are planning this surprise cruise for her birthday. What are fund ways to tell her? We are thinking of telling her on her birthday this year (Oct 2015), the cruise will leave ON her 13th birthday the following year.

So how did you tell your kids about your DCL?

While it was not a cruise, for my son we surprised him with a trip to WDW for his 6th birthday. We managed to keep him in the dark till we pulled up to the airport for the flight. He managed to figure it out when he saw the room tags when I was unloading the luggage from the van.

As much as I would LOVE to do that, I can't for a few reasons. Mostly because I can not keep the secret that long :P Also since I am pulling her out of school for the trip she will need to be aware for school work. We are pretty sure her best friend and her mom are going to go with us and that we will keep a secret until the car service stops to pick them up on the way to the airport

My DD(12) would prefer that I wait to tell her until closer to the cruise. A year seems like FOREVER to her.

On a Disney World trip for her 10th birthday, we told her we were going somewhere but didn't tell her where. We got all the way to the airport in Atlanta where we had to change planes before she figured out where. That was a lot of fun. We had another trip planned though, so I was able to get her preferences by asking her questions for that trip.

We scheduled a character call on Christmas Day to tell our 10 yo DD she was going on a birthday cruise two weeks later. It worked great.

It's pricy for what you actually get, but we surprised our kids with a trip to Hawaii with a bowl of personalized M&Ms. It cost around $40, but it was so awesome to see the light bulb go off when they understood what the message was. I personalized them with the date of the trip, a hang loose hand sign, an airplane and a surfboard. I put the bowl out on the counter before a holiday party and told the kids to grab a handful.

Also, I don't think a year is too long at all. DD12 and I have been obsessively planning our WDW trip later this month for the past three months. We both wish that we could have booked it earlier so we could have more fun with it. The anticipation is so much of the excitement for us.

Thanks, what characters can you choose from?

I love the M&M idea also!!

We surprised my nephew with a trip to Disneyland. He was 10 at the time. We pulled up to the main gate and he said, "where's the cruise ship?" Oh well, so much for surprises.
I did the character phone call for my two grandson - they were 6 at the time - and loved the phone call. Oh course, they bounced around the house for the next couple of hours.

Pack your bags... we leave tomorrow!
  • less countdown
  • less pacing
  • less concern about home break-ins because she's not advertising no one will be home.

We told our kids by ordering a character call. You get 2 calls per reservation and you can pick from 3 characters to call your child(ren). It's free and our kids were so surprised! :tigger::sulley:
