How to take laptop as hand luggage?

Is this one better than the Targus one's?

The Targus bags we have are great for a laptop, compact camera, Mp3 player etc but this Lowepro has a zip compartment at the bottom suitable for my SLR and extra lenses.
I looked at this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NzNCSKYQpw not English but it shows the bag well. Maybe other clips better.

Is this one better than the Targus one's?

I bought this bag last year and it is has much more padding than the Targus. The Targus looked perfectly fine but as Wayne said the Lowepro is excellent for camera equipment as well as laptop.

I had laptop, SLR, lenses, compact, sat nav, camcorder and all the poer leads and chargers for the aforementioned. Plus a handy pocket that tickets and traveling documents were put into

Thanks Reid. We will go for this, we don't have much camera equipment but always have lots of leads for the DS,PSP,mobiles.

Just got an email from them about 10 mins ago. They have credited me £1 they charged delivery.
After discount it was £22.50, added book to take it over £25 to get free delivery but they added £1 delivery by mistake, now refunded.

Wonder how big a 'small camera' is. If you can take a small camera and a pair of binoculars do you think our handycam case would count or do I have to fit it inside our handluggage?

I usually take a rucksack, which I put the laptop and camera into, and then take my tiny little Tinkerbell bag that I picked up from WalMart a few years ago. I fill up Tinkerbell with all the little awkward bits - keys, UK purse, US purse, liquids, etc - so that the larger, regular shaped stuff goes in my racksack. Generally speaking, I don't need anything in my rucksack for the flight, just what's in my Tinkerbell bag, which works out handy, since it means I don't have to go wading through and disrupting everything.

My laptop has one of those foamy skin things, which I used the first few years, but now I just tend to chuck it in my rucksack without anything. Also takes up less room, since the foam cover is reasonably thick! Obviously, laptop has to be taken out at the airport and repositioned (which can take a few minutes), but that's about it.

I will not take offence if you all lose patience with me on this one, but I am trying to get my head around this laptop/cabin baggage thing as per the VA website.

If I used a bag like the lowepro as hand luggage and stuffed my other bits and bobs(camera, magazine/newspaper and whatever else fits into it) as long as it meets the dimension and weigt requirements, that is okay?

Yes, that will be fine. All you will need to do, is when you get to security, remove the laptop and place it in one tray, and place the bag in another.

I ended up taking my laptop in a sports rucksack which I padded out with a hooded sweater so the laptop couldn't move about. Kept the rucksack under the seat on the plane. Got there and pack in one peice. I also had magazines, books, ds and toys in the rucksack. Took a hand bag with passports, phone, keys etc in.
