Our DS is unemployed and afraid of COVID - germs - washes his hands all the time.
He yells when he talks
Any idea of what is wrong with him ?
Should he see a psychologist ?
suggestions ?

Not sure what the unemployment has to do with anything. But as far as yelling when he talks, I'd get his hearing checked at the minimum. Then you can ask the doctor (I'd start with a GP) about the incessant handwashing.

OCD maybe? Autism? My autistic sons have no concept of appropriate voice volume or tone.

Is this behavior different from when he was growing up? Did he have any sort if illness or traumatic event happen before you noticed this behavior? Is he paranoid? Delusional? Seeing things/hearing voices?

He should probably talk to a psychologist, at minimum, if the reason he is unemployed is BECAUSE he is yelling all the time and constantly washing his hands.

All this, but also urge to see a therapist. I'm going to assume that you're presenting all this together because you know your son, you know somethings wrong, and these are some of the symptoms you've noticed.

How old is he? Are we talking 15 or 30? Was he ever evaluated for anything ever while in school?

I would be concerned. Did he know of anyone who passed from Covid? How old was he when it hit because maybe he can't process it properly? Young adult males were the group with the heart inflammation issues from illness and vaccine so maybe a Dr visit to put it in perspective would work. If it is deeper therapy might help, the whole thing could have traumatized him. Kids are tricky, you never know what can get into a person's ear and settle - it's good you noticed so high five for attentive parenting. The yelling when he talks could just be headphones too loud. Hearing is cumulative so over time you can't tell and many young men are gamers. Could also be ear wax, if no headphones I'd get him to an ENT for this part as I've known a few who had this. Some urgent care & Primary Care can remove ear wax but if its not wax you'll end up at an ENT anyway but young people usually hear well and if it was a thing would have turned up in school screening. Also, and no judgement, overuse and strong strains of a certain substance which was not but is now legal can trigger anxiety and such which I suppose this could be. So that's a few things I would start with if it was my kid - good luck.

honestly this sounds like my youngest (25). he is autistic and doesn't realize what his voice level sounds like (or tone for that matter). mine is also afraid of covid but has become agoraphobic vs. washing his hands all the time. he's working on it through tele-therapy but it's slow going (he has gotten physically ill and vomits when he's honestly tried his best to travel from our home by car).

i would speak to his doctor-stress can trigger ocd (it does for me), he may need some counseling.

best of luck.

He should probably see a therapist. My 22 year old nephew has been overly terrified of covid since 2020. Like over the top, unnaturally terrified. So much so that it was affecting his day to day life. He finally had to see a therapist to try and work thru his issues.

First I’m sorry someone thought what you wrote was funny. People can be so mean.
Did he know someone he was close to that died from covid or got very sick? What is his age? Is he unemployed because he is afraid of covid? He can get a job and keep himself safe. No one can tell you not to wear a mask no matter what kind of job he will get. Other ways he can stay healthy is eating right, exercise, take a vitamin. You want to have a good immune system if you do come in contact with covid. That’s what I do I hate wearing a mask. Now for the yelling does he yell all the time like he is hard of hearing or only happens when he’s mad?

Agreed, that person chooses the inappropriate emoji frequently - l call the behavior DIStourettes

Many young people are suffering mental health issues because of the covid lockdowns, masks etc so I would have him see a therapist. The fear has been masked in depression and anxiety issues so he may need medication.

Yes, your son definitely needs psychological counseling. The handwashing sounds like OCD, and he also might have anger to work through, as evidenced by the yelling. I hope you seek help for him and that things improve.
