With a family of 6 it is very hard to stay on site and still make it affordable. Does anyone have any suggestions which would solve my problem?

two rooms connecting at the value resort. is probably your best bet.

I would generally suggest DVC resort - but with 6 people - you would need either a 2-bedroom (very expensive) or 2 studios - 2 studios are not connecting. which you can rent from a dvc member on the DVC rental/trade board on this site.

So I guess it just depends upon the ages you are talking about.

At a dvc resort a person 18 or older can stay in a room without an older adult - some other timeshares and other hotels require the younger person to be 25.

otherwise you probably need to stay off site II and tug have a new website together (I listed it in another post) - this is probably also a good buy for a family - most timeshares have a full kitchen so you can save on your meals.

Sometimes, there can be good discounts for Fort Wilderness Cabins (like a cabin-themed mobile home). These offer a full kitchen, LR w/double murphy bed, BR w/full bed and bunk beds. The biggest drawbacks are that they only have one bathroom, the pool areas are not themed (no hot tub, no slide) and the bus transportation to the parks can take a long time (solved by driving to most parks).

The alternatives include 2 connecting rooms at a Disney value hotel (All Stars or Pop Century) or connecting rooms or a suite at one of the Downtown Disney area hotels. Those have no theme but they do have shuttle buses to the parks about every half hour. Some of them offer great discounts at certain times of the year.

If you are only staying Sun-Thurs nights, consider renting points from a DVC member and staying at a DVC resort in a 2BR. This is most cost effective during January, May or September. Popular school breaks and weekend nights are costly.

And don't overlook some of the great offsite options (see above)! HTH! :)

It is such a dilemma to be in, I just planned my May 2004 vacation, and believe me, I tried every way to stay on-site, but finally had to realize that I can't. I did look into renting from a DVC member, but a 2 bedroom suite would still be $340 a night, and that is only for Sun - Thurs nights. Then we'd have to move!

I decided on a 2 bedroom villa at Vistana for 7 nights, and the total price with tax came to $1035 (or close to it). I figured that we'd use the saved money on nice dinners in the parks, or character breakfasts...

But also take into account how well you get around in rental cars, my hubby and I can find anything, anywhere, so we're not afraid to drive to the parks. And with AAA, I think we'll be able to park pretty close.

Another consideration is what time of year you're going. We are going in May, and don't plan on having to deal with huge crowds.

I can truly sympathize with you!! Good Luck!!

dixielander - you can do far better than that. We just got back from a week at Windsor Palms in a 3-bedroom, 2-bath condo for $90/nite. 2-bedroom units are even less. In fact, for less than what you are paying at Vistana, you could rent a pool home. Check out vrbo.com for some other options.

we just came home sunday. we rented a private home at winsor palms, wyndam palms, same place. winsor is the name they are changing to.

it was 4 br, 3 bath, private pool, with a spa. it was $1047.00 for 8 nights. we did have the pool heated at a cost of $165.00.

i did this because we have 2 dd, 16 & 18, and they brought a friend, she was 17. dh loved it because he wasn't always being told to close his eyes all week, eeek. lol

we also liked this because we always get home later from the parks that we expect, and the club house is only open till 10:00 or 10:30 pm every night. but it is beautiful. my family loved the movie theater.

there are also several other plans on the same road, they all look pretty similar, from the outside. i don't know about their club houses. 1 is indian palms, i can't remember the others, but they are all within a few blocks of eachother. if you look on rental web sites, i am sure you will see them listed.

i would not recomend the same rental company we used, but that is still a work in progress. hope this helps, enjoy, kim
