How to set up a budget for my disabled son? UPDATE post 25

As noted, he needs to keep his money blow $2000.

Just a note--while SSA says his cash/savings have to be below $2,000, in our state, Medicaid says it has to be below $1,500. So it's good to checking the asset limits for Medicaid as well as SSI if he is receiving both.

I'm sorry but it's just not true about the "Fair Share." That's only one method Social Security uses to determine benefits and can actually harm your son. OP, you need to do some serious research on this.

Hi Kay1,

I've never heard of other methods. Can you elaborate? Also, in what way would fair share harm him? Are you saying it could somehow reduce his benefits?

You mention OP needing to do research, but I know from experience how hard it is to find information on this topic. Can you point us to some information online?

Thanks!

Hey, I think we might be approved! We got a letter asking my son to come in later this month and bring a trusted family member with him because they decided that he needs a "Representative Payee" to manage his benefits. That sounds like good news, right? I'm excited for him and I hope that is what this means. :woohoo:

Yay! That's great, Ellen! I hope at the appointment you can get any questions answered that you still have about his contribution, how you are allowed to help him spend his money, and what kind of records you need to keep.

Sounds good to me! Rep payee are usually someone who handles the persons money for them when they cannot or are not responsible enough to handle it for themselves. You (of whoever) would basically have control over all of his money and the decisions on how to utilize the money. They'll give you the rules and regs when you go!
