Traveling with a infant in Sept to take advantage of a great deal with free dining. How do you sanitize bottles without a microwave or boiling water,
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Toon

It's been a while since I had to deal with this, but here's my best shot. :) I'd get one of those bottles that takes plastic inserts to hold the milk/formula. See if you can get extra nipples (or if you need to buy a few bottles to get the extra nipples) so that baby's not drinking from the same nipple all day. The inserts can be thrown away as they get used. When you get back to the hotel, give the nipples a good wash with soap and hot water.

I just got some dish soap to wash the bottles well. We had a food court at CBR, so I filled the empty bottles with the hot water from the beverage station and let them sit for a while. This water was very hot. You shouldn't need to sterilize the bottles after every use anyways, most packaging says it will deteriorate the nipples if sterlized on a regular basis. Good Luck!

I did use the playtex bottles with the liners for my son. We packed extra nipples and a travel bottle of dish soap. Every night I hand washed all the nipples really well. Powder formula is hard to mix in these bottles so I used the 8oz. cans of ready to feed. Hope this helps.

I washed mine with dish soap from home and would stick them in the microwave at the cafeteria or baby care centers with a bit of water in them.

I only sanitize my bottles once a week at home, so I am planning on sanitizing them right before I leave for our trip and they will be good the whole week. I will just make sure to use nice hot, soapy water when I wash them.

After using a bottle one of us would go to the bathroom and rinse it out with very hot water. Then when we got back to the room we'd wash the bottle/nipple out with dish detergent, hot water and a bottle brush we brought from home. We had to do this on the road as well because we drive down. I just keep all the clean bottles in one freezer ziploc and all the cleaning stuff in another.

We use the Playtex bottles that take liners. So I would fill the 8oz bottles with 6 oz of formula (easier to mix this way) and then toss the liners when empty. As for washing I brought along a bottle brush and some soap that I left in the hotel room. I would then wash them out each evening and prep them for the next morning so that they would be cold and ready to go. I would also set out a washcloth to let both the bottle and nipples air dry on. Then once I returned homw into the dishwasher (sanitize rinse) they went. We have done this on numerous trips and have not had any problems.

You could also buy an inexpensive hotpot like one of these: click here to use in your hotel. This is what we did on one trip when we needed hot water in our hotel room (I have to have my morning tea, lol!) hth!

When my girls were little I used the disposable liners also. I sterilized the nipples by putting water thru the coffee maker with NO COFFEE. Very hot water and soaked them. layed them on a towel to dry and ready to go for next day.

Homemaker,

Did you bring the ready-to-feed cans for your entire trip? Or did you make a grocery stop for them once you got there?

I don't mind splurging on these for travel. Can anyone tell me where to find the 8 oz. ready-to-feed cans of Enfamil? I'm planning to take a towncar service with a grocery stop in order to buy formula, diapers, and water bottles. Any suggestions for a good place to stop for these items?

And by the way - does anyone know where you can buy those disposable nipple/collar units like they give you in the hospital? I would love to splurge on those as well, but I've never seen where I can buy them. :confused3

Thanks, all!

We didn't use bottles, but there is an Avent steam sterilizer in the baby care center in AK that you can use to steam sterilize your bottles/nipples. We used it for our pacifiers when I stopped there to nurse/change my daughter since we figured they had gotten quite dirty during the trip despite trying to keep them clean.

Also, Medela makes sterlizing bags that work in the microwave and I'm pretty sure all the baby care centers have a microwave that you can use. It's just a plastic Ziploc type of bag that you put the supplies in (not sure if bottles would fit, we used the Playtex disposable nursers so we just used the bag for nipples and breastpump parts) and add some water then microwave for a few minutes.

disneyfriend,

On our last trip we shipped everything in advance to WL. I have always packed enough for the entire trip. When we are driving I pack it in the car and when we are flying I ship it to the hotel.

I think I got my ready to feed cans from Babies r us. I know if you do a search for the formula company it will bring up several drug stores that sell the 8oz cans. I believe I have also seen the ones you get from the hospital online. Good Luck!

We went when my dd was 3 months old, I took dish soap and bottle brush from home and used hot water from the coffee maker. As for formula, I had 8oz cans shipped directly shipped from emamil. A little more expensive but a lot easier.

After my 3rd was born pediatrican said that sterlizing after baby started to crawl was useless, since he was crawling and would put his hands in his mouth.

Hope this help.

FYI I worked in a hospital birthing center for over 5 years. It is not really necessary to sanitize bottles. You no longer need to boil them etc. Just normal dish washing with hot water is enough.
