How to make burnt edge scrolls?

I am wanting to make some thank you scrolls for my wedding favors and was wondering if anybody knows how I go about making the edges looked burnt?

Also looking for wedding images of cinderella that I could use...such as the glass slipper, coach, castle etc. but haven't been able to find much on the internet.

I've never done this before but I would try tearing a scrap piece of paper and then using brown and black chalks to try for the burnt look. You will probably need to experiment.

For the wedding images, the person who comes to mind is "dreams91" - she has a wedding picture in her signature (on the carousel).

I used to do the burnt edges on school projects in the "Dark Ages" as my kids tell me. I just held them up near the flame on a candle - keeping a dishpan with water in it nearby...just in case. If you're patient enough, you can usually get them to start to singe w/o actually producing a flame. I usually ended up with a flame & had to blow it out. Then I'd just wet my fingertips in the dishpan & make sure the edges were out.

You could also tea stain them - but that involves making the entire sheet wet which is not always a good thing.

Thanks for the responses. Dreams91 if you have a picture of your scrolls I would love to see them. My wedding theme is Cinderella so looking for her and the prince riding away in the carriage would be cool. Was thinking if I could find the 2 birds holding a banner putting that at the top with the words "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and down below putting the castle with Cinderella and the prince, right now I am open to any ideas. Also the clock tower would be cute too as I will have mini crystal grandfather clocks on all the reception tables set to just before midnight.

Hello! We made scrolls for invitations to a Survivor themed party. We tore the paper and carefully burnt the edges (using a flame). I want to warn you that the burnt paper got black stuff all over us whenever we touched it!

In my scrapbook I've torn the edges of the paper and used chalk to make it look burnt. That looks GREAT, but the chalk comes off on your hands.

So is there a way to prevent the charred edges or chalk from coming off on your guests hands? Just something to think about. Good luck!!!

I just take a lighter (the ones you use on birthday candles) and hold it up to the edge of the paper (i lightly wet the edges of the paper beforehand). I work on small sections at a time. Once one section starts to burn, I move on to the next section. If the paper does catch on fire, i just run that section under running water (this is why I do it near my sink!).

We made "Wanted" posters for DD's 4th birthday party invitations and burned the edges with a lighter, very carefully, but you do get black soot on the edges so you have to be really careful not to smear that on your scrolls/writing.There are some "fixative" sprays that could keep the chalk idea from smearing but I've never tried that.

Tear the edges and then rub brown ink on them. That would give the look and be easier than burning them and you wouldn't have the chalk to rub off. You can rub the ink right on the edge or up a little on the paper.

I would use handmade mulberry paper or something like it because it's easy to tear, use a q tip dipped in water (or special scrapbooking tool) to outline the edge prior to tearing, and use walnut ink or some other colored ink or scrapbooking chalk to color the edges and somehow set it which is pretty much what some other posters suggested already.

Or you can just find a place where you can buy premade stationery that has the look of burnt edges. That might be easier.

I would..
Rip towards you.
Use Distressing walnut Ink rubbing the edges of the paper right against the pad and the using a sponge or your finger to smudge some on the edges of the paper.
wet your fingertips and roll longer pieces.

I recently took a distressing class and we just did this...

Tear paper torward you
Take and rub walnut ink on the inside tear (the edge of the page where you tore-just before the paper is smooth again -does that make sense?)
On the outside edge take black ink and line that edge (there is actually an ink pad called soot out there-it is in a black case-you can get it from paperwishes.com I think)
Take a q-tip with water and lightly blend the 2 colors...
Once dry take a nail file or fine grit sand paper and pull the edges torward you...to give you that rolled ashy look

And you're done! its a cool look!
