This will be my first long haul flight, and I am not a good flyer! I have never been able to sleep on a flight, but I am hoping that I will this time! I am wondering how everyone keeps themselves occupied on such a long flight when they are not sleeping? I am taking my DS with me, and hopefully taking a Sudoku/crossword book too, but I'm still worried that I'll get bored!

how old is DS? what time of day/night are you flying?

when the kids were little i took TONS of stuff to keep them busy - little games, puzzles, coloring books, drawing pads, cards...
and lots of snacks...

also, does your plane have seat back entertainment? that's very helpful...

if not, you might want to consider taking something you can watch movies on - a laptop? ipodtouch? something like that..

also, if you're flying late at night, you should try to sleep....unless DS is little, in which case, you'll have to stay awake to watch him...

How silly of me! I actually meant that I was taking my Nintendo DS! :rotfl2: I completely forgot about the abbreviations! lol

Our plane will have seat back entertainment - I just hope they have some decent movies :D we're flying out at 10:25am, but flying back through the night, which will hopefully make it easier for me to sleep!

I have such a short atttention span on the plane that I find movies and books are no good at distracting me things I like are:

magazines
crossword puzzles
DS (game not son!! LOL!!)
radio comedy downloaded onto mp3 player
sometimes there's a tv programme that I like on the seat back thingy

Hi

Funny enough, I prefer long haul to short haul:confused:

I think you have to resign yourself to the fact that once your on that plane then your on it for the rest of the day (I find short haul i'm checking my watch every 20mins to see how much longer there is left)

I cannot watch the tv's or read as I find it makes me feel sick:sick:.nor can I usually fall asleep (think that has something to do with the fact that im frightened of missing something:laughing:)

I tend to just watch the world go by, take lots of trips to the toilet (you can usually find someone to talk to there:laughing:), and tend just drive the rest of the family mad :rotfl2:

Im sure you will be fine, its not half as bad as you think:thumbsup2

I never thought about some comedy downloads! That would really help, I think :thumbsup2 Thanks for the suggestions! :goodvibes

lol I would never have thought to make lots of trips to the toilet to talk to people! lol

My friend who is coming with me apparently sleeps for hours on long flights, so I want to make sure I can keep myself occupied if that is the case!

the funnything is my very first flight was to orlando in 1991.
the only part i dont like is my ears popping on the way down to landing.
most flight no have the screen infront of you and you can choose what you want to watch, trips to the toilet, even if you dont need it to just keep you legs from striffing up.
there is 2 meals on the way over and all the drinks.
most of all enjoy it, its the start of the big american adventure.

les :santa:

I am a bad traveller too but if I take Stugeron it really sorts it out. Don't feel sick at all. Also it helps me sleep - I can never sleep during the day at all but if I have it I sleep loads on the plane :thumbsup2

It never makes me too drowsy to drive on the other side but that is something to watch out for.

Enjoy your flight!

Even after 20 years of long-haul flying, I'm still nervous and I find it difficult to concentrate on movies or books. Things that keep me occupied for short bursts such as magazines and puzzles work best for me. If I could go online and DIS for the entire journey, I'd be sorted! :thumbsup2

couldn't agree more with this! lol would make things so much better - just being able to get on the internet in general would be good, because I can spend ages on there! Would pass in so much time for me! lol

Oh Debbie what a soloution to my problems:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Our recent trip to Orlando was the best long haul I've ever done, and I think this is why! I now reccomend this to everyone with a DS!!!

Buy a new game, that you really want to play!

Dont even take off the cellophane until you are in the air! (Or if you want to pack lighter then you can take the card out but DO NOT play it at all before the flight!

I find if I have a brand new DS game, I cna get a good hour or two of newness out of it, and then be able to come back to it a few times while it's new and still exciting. I find if I play a game I know I can get too distracted and it doesn't take enough of my attention to let time fly by like a new one does!

We are booked on Virgin for next March and if it's a new plane then we will have in flight internet apparently!!

Sounds like a perfect solution, except for one thing:

Is that right? Wow! That would be fantastic. Do you need a laptop, iPod, phone or some other device, or is it accessible via the entertainment system?

I think it was wifi - so you'll need a laptop/phone, and I also think it's only in PE and UC, but it was a couple of weeks ago I read it.

Fingers crossed though. I know a few of the american carriers have it already, as well as live cable TV on the seatback TVs!!

Hopefully within the next 5/10 years we can all DIS while we're flying! :cool1:

That would make flights much more manageable!!

As for the DS games, I have bought 2 games that I haven't opened yet, so will keep those especially for the flight. My friend is taking hers too, so we plan on taking quite a few games with us to keep us going! lol
