I am looking for a website that sells a small cooler for keeping insulin at the correct temperature. I think it is called a frigid pack? Does anyone whose kids have diabetes know what I am talking about. We are leaving for disney and I am looking to procure one before we hit that warm flordia weather

I am not sure about the cooler...but I do know that you can store insulin at the First Aid center...there is one in every Disney Park. But not sure how often you guys use it....if you want to carry it around or can plan your day to stop by there occasionally.

They are very nice there. We used First Aid in the parks and they were a great help to us!

Have fun on your trip!!! :thumbsup2

Someone will probably post something about the cooler, too...I am just not sure about that. The diabetic traveling with us has a pump.

You guys are the best. Thanks for the First Aid tips and the webside link. Exactly what I am looking for.

Use the cooler concept website to buy a Frio Pack. They are the best. I've been using them since 2007 and I love them. It always keeps the insulin at the perfect temperature.

Have fun at Disney and don't worry to much about the diabetes!:thumbsup2

hi we travel at lot, including from the caribeen to the artic, and use the frio packs to both keep the insulin cool in the heat and stop it from freezing in extreem cold. We always take it with us on any holiday, can be used in hotel rooms if there is no fridge.

As I only have to shoot myself twice a day, I will charge a syringe for my evening shot and put that and the Byetta pen in the Frio pack and keep the insulin bottles at home or in the hotel room. And there is also room for the pen needle and an acohol swab.

Are the Frio packs good for all day in the Hot Florida sun (not that we are going during the peak of summer)? Or do we still need to keep them cool, or do a swap out at some point in the day? (Planning on heading back to our place mid-day to the littlest ones can nap)

The Frio packs we use work by evaporation and are just fine in the summer. If it seems like it is drying out, just run it under a water fountain for a little while. (They are "charged" by soaking in cold water.)

I work in a huge hospital in Pittsburgh, I am a RN, we have not had to refrigerate insulin for years, per the companies. We use too! What type do you use? Are you just concerned that it will be tooooooooooo hot?

Opened bottles of insulin can be kept at room temperature. Unopened bottles of most insulins I know of should be kept in the fridge. If you're storing unopened bottles of Novolog at room temperature for longer than a month then that would put patients at risk (see below).

I assume people going to the parks with insulin bottles or pens are using opened ones so a Frio is a good idea. I have not personally tried using a Frio in the super hot times of the year in FL.

Here is the FDA info on Novolog:

NovoLog in unopened vials, cartridges, and NovoLog FlexPen and NovoLog InnoLet Prefilled syringes should be stored between 2° and 8°C (36° to 46°F). Do not freeze. Do not use NovoLog if it has been frozen or exposed to temperatures that exceed 37°C (98.6°F).
After a vial, cartridge, or Prefilled syringe has been punctured, it may be kept at temperatures below 30°C (86°F) for up to 28 days, but should not be exposed to excessive heat or sunlight. Opened vials may be refrigerated. Cartridges should not be refrigerated after insertion into the Novo Nordisk 3 mL PenFill cartridge compatible insulin delivery devices. The infusion set (tubing and needle) should be changed at least every 48 hours.

our bottles are patient specific and we do not use ours more than a few days for each individual patient and our med rooms are air conditioned so I guess "heat" isn't an issue. you may just have to resort to a fanny pack!:rotfl2:
