My boys are all teenagers now. We were contemplating driving next year and then I remembered Megabus and the Auto Train.

I have this crazy idea rolling around about doing both- Megabus to Wash. DC/ Auto Train to Sanford (We are just cruising this time around).

I'm not sure how to get from Washington DC to Lorton, VA once we are off the Megabus. They tout about the autotrain being from Wash DC to Orlando, but I don't see that anywhere. All I see is Lorton to Sanford.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

If you do not have a vehicle reservation, you can't take the Auto Train.

There are two passenger trains that pass through Wash DC daily, heading to Florida--no car needed.

As was Mentioned, the AUTOtrain requires you have an AUTO attached to your reservation.

While people will mention that it runs from Washington to Orlando, in reality it runs from Lorton to Sanford which are just outside of Washington and Orlando respectively. (Think of them as the metro area, so most people would know the big cities but not the smaller towns/cities surrounding them.)

If you are looking for a car-less way to travel, You Could just take the regular Amtrak Train that will run down the east coast to Orlando (Or Kissemee). depending upon your departure location, you could even catch the train further up the coast and avoid the bus entirely.
