Newbie thinking of going to HDDR after a day at Hollywood Studios. Would it be a major pain? How long would it take to get there? Would we just hop on the bus?

No, just take the Ft Wilderness resort bus. I believe it will stop at the Outpost and you'll have to switch to the internal transportation system at that point. From Studios it should take about 10 minutes to FtW and then another 5-10 minutes from Outpost, depending on how long the bus stops at any of the internal stops before arriving at Pioneer Hall. (Add on any time you will have to wait for a bus to arrive at either Studios or Outpost.) I would allow 75-90 minutes for transportation just to be on the safe side.

Take the fort Wilderness bus. Then the shuttle at FW to HDDR. The hassle will be going back to whatever resort you are at unless you are at a MK resort (WL, CR, Poly, GF), then you could just take a boat back.

Depends on what time show the OP plans on seeing. The 7:15 and 9:30 shows both have buses waiting after the show to take you back to your resort. If the OP was planning on seeing the early show, they could take the boat back to MK and then jump on their resort bus. It really is no hassle getting back to your resort after HDDR.

OP,Personally,I would hop on the first one of these buses to arrive at DHS:

Wilderness Lodge
Contemporary Resort

From those 2 locations, there are boats that will take you directly to Fort Wilderness' Settlement Depot which is where the HDDR is located.

The boats are more FUN and IMHO quicker than the internal FW buses.

Allow 60-75 minutes for a "worst case scenario".:)

The Fort bus will probably stop at the Lodge first.

We also got a bus back to our resort following the early show. It took a little while as it was a shared bus but was a nice easy ride, everyone had a seat and we got to see resorts we had never visited. We had the back up plan of a taxi back to our resort but it was not needed! FW is a fun place to kill some extra time if you get there a little early too.
