My 4 yr old dd has been asking me why the characters don't talk. I'm not sure what to tell her. What have you told your kids?

Oh, I'd love a good answer for this too. Hadn't thought of that before, but my daughter will definately ask

Flashback - April 2001

My then four-year-old son sees Micky walk by right as you enter main street (He was doing some filming there). He turns to me and says:

"Dad, why is the guy in the Mickey Mouse suit not talking?"

I responded, "Why do you think it's someone in a suit?"

"He has a zipper down his back and I can see the back of his neck".

Even at four, he was very practical. Of course, once we got to MGM and saw Buzz Lightyear, there was no doubt HE was the real thing. He tried to run away, he was so excited.

I have no answer to your question, I just thought I would pass along this story.

Mike in the Maritimes.

I have the answer to your question! You tell your kids that they have a cold, and that they have to save there voices for the cartoons! :rotfl: Genius eh'? ;)

Ha. That's a cute answer. I never even thought about my daughter asking that. I don't know if she'd buy that, but I will definitily remember that so I can have something in mind.

There was an answer to that on here somewhere last month. Someone said to tell them that when the characters go from being a toon to a real "person", their voice gets lost and so they can't talk. I gave this answer to my DS7 and DS3 and they truly believed that. Then, on the ME they show a video where the "real" characters talk, and my DS7 said, "See, he can talk sometimes!" I just thought this was a cute answer.

Both good answers!

Trying to come up with a quick response I ended up telling her they were tired and resting their voices.

I always say that they are just shy!

That's the one my mom used on me. I would say that they're so excited to meet your kid that they are speechless. ;)

When my nephew was 4yo we went to Univeral. He got his picture taken with Sponge Bob and then wanted him to sign his book, the cm (or what ever they are called at US) said that Sponge Bob was out of the water too long and since it was so hot his arms shrunk really short and he was unable to write. My nephew being the smart kid that he is responded with "Oh! thats why they don't talk, because it's too hot and they are really thirsty!" We never knew he even wondered why they didn't talk :confused3 Problem salved without any fast thinking from us :thumbsup2

I read somewhere that one answer someone used was that the characters meet so many children who speak different languages that they don't talk in case the child doesn't understand them. It is better to use the universal language of smiles, waves and hugs.

or a variation of this is that they don't want to hurt other children's feelings by talking to some and not being able to talk to others because of the different languages.
