hi
We have stayed off-site and had to drive to DLR.
But want to stay closer next time, at a Good Neighbour and walk to the parks.

We are thinking of doing a 1/2 day in DTD and Trader Sams. We have never been to DTD (only gone as far as World of Disney )

if we enter through the pedestrian entrance on Harbour, where is that exactly? is that across from the IHOP? we then must pass through the Esplanade on the way to DTD correct? so do we have to wait in line for DLR bag check to through the esplande on the way to DTD? or is there a quicker option if you are just passing through and not entering the parks? Do you need to have a ticket for DLR for that day to pass through the esplanade? ( we want to go to DTD on a non-disney day)

if we stay on Katella, how do we enter DTD? do we walk downd disneyland drive? tia

There is no need for a ticket to pass through the Esplanade, it is just a pain if you aren't actually going into the park. The entrance area is at the crosswalk directly in front of the Best Western Park Place Inn.

As to Good Neighbor Hotels, not all are walkable, it is just a designation that gives some benefits to the hotels.

That being said, I'd stay on Harbor Blvd or on Katella NEAR Harbor Blvd. That is EAST of Disneyland & DCA. Unless I was staying at a Disney hotel, I would not want to be west of the parks. I would not stay any further west down Katella than the Convention Center, there is just no need with so many good and reasonable hotels in better locations.

If you DID stay further west down Katella, like at the BW Stovall's, you'd enter DTD near/at the Grand Californian Resort.

When is this trip planned for?

Correct, you will need to pass through security/bag check - there is no way to bypass this if you opt to cut through the Esplanade. However, you do not need ticket to cross the Esplanade. There isn't really any way to avoid security unless you want to walk further (i.e., go around either DL or DCA and then enter DTD via Disneyland Drive).

Yes, you can walk north on Disneyland Drive and cut through the GCH to enter DTD.

IMHO, the best local hotels are not "Good neighbor" rated.

What are the best local hotels? Good Neighbor is not a rating, it is part of a program that allows some benefits to hotel guests,

we are planning for January 2016 . thanks for the info.

By January you will have at least four more hotels open in addition to the new ones that have opened in the last year. Not yet open, but soon are the Marriott Courtyard Anaheim and Waterpark, Holiday Inn Express next door to it, the Hyatt House at Katella & Harbor (directly across from the new SpringHill Suites Anaheim Resort/Convention Center), and Homewood Suites (next to Toy Story Lot).

Across from the new Homewood is the Hyatt Place which is new too. Not open by the time you are coming, but opening in 2016 are a new Marriott Residence Inn (where the Jolly Roger used to be), Great Wolf Lodge & Water Park (a real, full scale water park), the GardenWalk is getting two hotels (opening late 2016 or early 2017) and three more in Garden Grove across the street from Great Wolf.

Awesome map, thanks

The map is very, very dated...... it still calls the Hotel Indigo the HI Express (that changed at least 3 years ago) , doesn't show either of the two, new SpringHill Suites (Anaheim Resort & Anaheim Maingate) or Hyatt Place.
