How to convince DH to buy DVC membership???

Lisa - my DH was also against DVC until I rented points and we stayed in a one bedroom villa at OKW, now he loves it!

For my DH it is the space of a one bedroom villa that makes DVC worth it. We are not cramped in the space of one hotel room. We also after taking the tour and talking everything over decided on a resale at BWV and then we just bided our time until the "right" contract came along. The price of resale was easier to swallow for him.

Even though he was at first relunctent to buy, now everytime we go he thanks me for finding so much information out about DVC and for pressing the issue with him. He thinks it is totally worth it. ::MinnieMo

KristiKelly, I enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing. Looks like we are neighbors in the Tarheel state, too.

lisamc1q, the only regret you usually hear about DVC is people wish they had bought when they first learned of it and had not waited.

It is a very personal decison. It is not a good financial investment, so that may be an issue for your husband. I love disney and my wife really wanted to join DVC but I was hesitant. I am very glad that she persuaded me to join. Now I am the one who sits at the computer calculating points, and figuring out when we can go again. I worry about the money and everything - so that is probably why. Now, we have a wonderful vacation waiting for us at any time, I could not be happier with it.

I love everything about Disney - the parks, resorts, activities (golf), dining. I think it has everything you could want in a vacation. We could go down for a week and not even go to the parks and have a great time

We plan on having kids - so you know you will go back year after year with them.

We used our DVC membership to give my parents a vacation for their anniversary.

So - we have only been members for about 9 months, we have already gone down once - and I would go back in a heartbeat.

If your husband doesnt love Disney, then it may be tough to convince him. I think someone else suggested booking a stay at a DVC resort. That is a good idea. We were very impressed with the rooms - and the treatment we got from the CM's

I am completely satisfied so far with our membership - but it is a decision that should be well thought out before doing.

We just bought a DVC resale for 100 points at OKW. I am a Disney addict - would go twice a year if we could! My DH has fun, and usually enjoys most of the trip, but wouldn't mind skipping it for 3 or 4 years! Ug.... not possible. After discussing it for weeks and crunching the numbers, we came to the conclusion that we only wanted to have to pay maintenance fees on 100 or fewer points. That would give me a trip once a year or every other year, and wouldn't make him choke on Disney bills! It comes down to compromise, I guess - he has a ski boat that I couldn't care less about and would rather not wake up at 6am ona Saturday to go skiing - I have DVC! Good luck - and maybe try offering to start small - you can always add on later!!!

I want to disagree just a little with tjkraz (who gives excellent advice 95% of the time).

While the dining discounts are limited, it's an exaggeration to call them "extremely" limited. There is a discount for at least one meal at roughly 30 of the roughly 75 sit-down restaurants at WDW, and many of those are quite popular and well worth going to. The discounts are concentrated in the Epcot - Epcot Resort area and Downtown Disney. We used the DVC discount at six restaurants last year without even trying. One might dream of a discount at all restaurants for all meals, but that IS just a dream so far.

Not that this matters -- as tjkraz points out, all such discounts are ephemeral and should not play a role in your decision.

I typed up a very detailed proposal for my husband that was so well thought out and put together, it could have been part of the DVC literature - well, maybe not that good. But in addition to that, in the proposal I gave my DH one very special reason to buy in - for our children. The key being that I said children not just child!

We had one child at the time. That is how I told him I was pregnant! And we did end up buying in!!! Proposal + baby = DVC Member! Plus a little help from Gram in the money department ;) Good luck, and if you do need more specific advice, I'm happy to share!

P.S. Just thought about how to get an add-on. Maybe it's already time to start thinking about baby #3 :grouphug:

We spent our 15th anniversary at the WL and had the time of our lives. I had tried to get DW to go on the tour before but this time they were building the new Villas next door. We took the tour and got our free meal and during our dinner we talked about how much fun we had and if we could return every year to continue the fun, we would never stop celebrating. That was 2 add-ons ago and we have are about to celebrate our 29th year together with another trip home. We took our grown children with us this past summer and had the best time as a family that we can remember.

Good luck and hope to say Welcome Home soon.:smooth:

Char,

I love your answer! If your proposal is in electronic format (and not too personal), would you mind emailing it to me? I'd love to see it. About the baby thing, we have three (2, 5, and 7) and I am contemplating a fourth. But I'm 39 and not sure I want another one at this age (plus the added work). Besides, if I did have another one, my DH would say that there is NO way we could afford the DVC so it would backfire on me. Anyway, I don't have my husband convinced yet that Disney is our yearly vacation spot or that we need deluxe accomodations. He would be happy in the All Stars or a moderate. I'm going to try to get him to tour SSR when we go next month.

Thanks for writing!

Hi Lisamc1!

Remember, you don't have to convince him to go to Disney every year (even if you want to). Consider purchasing a resale for 100 points and go every other year. Like another poster said, that will keep your costs down. Also, tell him it is the Disney Vacation Club. If he is concerned about others, fam and friends judging the word timeshare, another Dis'er said they used the term 'vacation club' and that piques interest not derision::yes::

Hope that helps! Good luck
:teeth:

I'm not sure how I feel about a resale. Isn't that a little risky? Isn't it better to buy through Disney themselves? Besides, I DO want to go every year! LOL And I've already called the DVC Disney's version of a timeshare so he already has the negative attitude that some people have towards timeshares.

I see the only benefit of buying through Disney as being the easy financing. If you buy a resale, you get the same benfits as anyone who buys direct from Disney. Besides saving you money, you can buy the resort you really want the most.

There really is not any more risk in buying a resale than there is in buying any piece of real estate.

Re-sale is not risky. It's done by a licensed broker (e.g. Time Share Store advertised at the top). The only risk is that you come to an agreement with the seller and DIsney exercises their ROFR (right of first refusal) so they take the contract and you start over.

You get a welcome package just as though you went through DVC. Re-sale gives you more in the options of having lower points and it's easier to get points at resorts other than SSR.

Yep! Definitely strike while the iron's hot! In this case, while the "oven" is hot! Lol!

I was pregnant with our second girl. Really needed a vacation. Wanted on-site convenience for 2 young ones. Got great rates at the swan and dolphin for when the baby would have been 7 months old. Did some more research and thought why not put the money I would have spent for the hotel towards DVC?

Then I went to work convincing DH...

He got me a beautiful diamond bracelet when I had our first child. We had thought to give it to her some day, maybe when she got married.

Told my DH, no jewelry for me for the second child. I WANT a membership in DVC!!!!

1) The mega money we were planning to spend on my post baby trip could go towards off setting the initial costs.

2) We had gone to WDW 4 or 5 times already in the previous 5 years. The chances of going again will only increase now that we will have 2 children.

3) My aunt and uncle were already DVC members and they gave a good recommendation for joining.

4) I was pregnant with his child and how could DH deny me anything I would want? :p

We decided on an OKW private resale (150) loaded with banked and current points through an internet ad. Used a closing company.

Before the ink was even dry on the resale, we bought another resale. This time, 150 BWV points through Jaki.

It seemed kind of unfair that the DVC contract was worth way more than the diamond bracelet! So, we "had to" buy another contract, so that each of the girls would get their own contracts one day! Besides, Jaki found us a loaded BWV contract that was too good to pass up.

Once we were in the DVC system, I booked our planned vacation using points and canceled our resort reservations.

Boy I'm glad we bought at that time. Resale and direct prices have gone up so much since then.
