Question for teachers that have white boards in their rooms. We just got white boards over the summer their is a film on my white board what is the best way to clean it. I picked up the white board spray but I don't know if I should us that to clean it before I use it for the first time.

Not a teacher, but when I was in HS and college, chalk boards were the dominant boards, but overhead projection was also pretty common, using wet erase markers. In the business world, whiteboards are ubiquitous. We even had boards with a built in scanner that included a printer. They were pretty common in cubes.

That board cleaner is really only needed for old markings that won't come off easily. They can also be used to make the board absolutely spotless. They smell pretty bad. If it's a new board, I'd say a wet paper towel is all you need, followed by a dry one. You added that it's a little dusty, so a wet paper towel should do the trick.

Thanks for the tip. I did not know if I needed to use something special on it before I used it for the first time. They are nice but I am going to miss my chalk board.

I remember when the markers were really stinky, and possibly toxic. I think benzene used to be the common solvent in the markers, but now it's alcohol. I guess they call them "low odor".

Sometimes something would remain on the board, like a name or a phone number, and after weeks or even months a little shadow of the markings would remain if erased. Sometimes trying to erase would smear the marker ink and leave a faint color on the board. That's what the cleaning spray is supposed to handle. I wouldn't use it routinely.

I'm surprised your school still used chalkboards. Seems odd they've never updated. It's been almost two decades now all the schools around here have had dry erase boards. Maybe it's a regional thing?? :duck:

You don't pull any punches, do you? :dogdance:

The solvent in a dry erase marker is just alcohol. It's no surprise that alcohol works well to clean.

Our custodians use some homemade mixer on the board that leaves them a mess. So, I use the official cleaner from Expo so clean up after them or when they don't wash the boards.

We use the low odor spray, one trick I've learned is if there is "leftover" marker, is to write over it then use an eraser, takes even old stubborn marks off without having to break out the spray.

I use the expo spray. A coworker who had a new whiteboard installed had a hard time writing on it and cleaning it . Turns out it had a layer of plastic to protect it during installation that was never taken off. It was a few weeks before she realized.
