How to book of one person may or may not come?

Our time frame will be coming up soon to book ADRs. We will be a party of 4 (DH, me, DS2, DS2). DMIL hasn't decided whether she'll be coming with us or not. We still have her on the room ressie. We figure we wouldn't be hurting anything there if we cancel last minute (she's staying in our room so we're not holding up another room).

My question is this: what would be the proper thing to do -- Book for 5 and change it later (probably last minute) or book for 4? I wouldn't think that we'd be able to add her last minute if we made an ADR for 4. This will also be at the end of January, early February.

What do you advise?

Thanks!

I would book for 5 now, because they say it's harder to get seating for 5 than 4. You can always make the number less when you know for sure, you certainly won't be able to conveniently add one a month out from your vacation.

I agree book for more because its defaniltely not a big deal if someone doesnt show up..We've actually done this a few times and it always worked out great..
