Ang - How long did it take to hike out to the glacier and see the waterfall? I have been looking on the NPS website and cannot figure out how to actually hike out on the glacier. We were thinking of going to the glacier before our whale watching trip instead of after. They said they would pick us up or drop us off at the glacier, another decision to make. And I thought planning a cruise would be easy, LOL!
Hi there! When you get dropped off at Mendenhall they have a visitor's center there on site. You can look around inside and learn about Mendenhall and how glaciers are formed. Then you can walk around outside on a little path they have and take in the sights. Then you can go off the little sidewalk path and walk out towad the glacier to the waterfall. From far away, the watefall doesn't look like much until you get up close to it, it is huge! You will be walking on sandy/rocky area to get there but it's just a short 10 minute walk.
Now they DO have other trails you can go on that will give you a view from above that waterfall, and out over the little bay area, and from looking at the Mom029's pix, that looks like what she did. We didn't do that because we didn't have time, we went on a whale tour prior to getting there and then had to hurry and get back to the ship. It has been a while, but the glacier I meant you can actually walk right up to is Exit Glacier and that is in Seward, Alaska further north.
I have a ton of Alaska websites you can look at, let me gather them up for you and I'll post.
