How to avoid the freshman 15 according to Brooke Shields

She's an idiot. Most teens are heavier than ever and they're having sex, so her theory doesn't hold water.

Actually, over the last decade, the percentage of all high school students (9-12th grade) who report ever having had sexual intercourse has declined. [Source: Kaiser Family Foundation.] This is at the same time that obesity among teens has been increasing. While I don't think anyone has proved causation, there is a correlation.

However, we're not talking about teens. We're talking about college age folks, only some of whom are teens, and older teens at that -- older teens who are legal adults.

I don't think anyone has done a scientific study regarding when the best point in life to lose one's virginity is. In light of that, it is outrageous to assert that one's own personal perspective on this is categorically better than anyone else's. Shield's statements were all about herself and for anyone to assert that they know better than she does what would have been better for her, as a legal adult -- better than she who lives, 20+ years later, in her own skin -- well that's pretty shockingly haughty! :)

Everyone I know lost weight freshman year. Who wanted to eat that food? Ick! And we were always walking everywhere around town/campus because we had no cars!

So....she thinks if she got laid earlier she would have.....not gained the weight because she would want to keep her figure small to get more play or.....gained the weight anyway because she was getting laid WITH the weight, so who cares!

I'm confused LOL!

Her concerns appeared to be more about her emotional state than the side-effect of her weight. Instead of being manipulated by People's inflammatory headline, you should read what she actually said, between the quotation marks:
I think I would have had sex a lot earlier. I think I would have been much more in touch with myself. ... I think I wouldn't have had issues with weight -- I carried this protective 20 pounds [in college]. It was all connected.
A lot of people recognize the interrelation between body and emotion. It sounds like Shields recognizes, now, that her fixation on remaining a virgin adversely impacted her emotional well-being. I think that's what people should be taking away from what she's said.

whoever said it was from her perspective is right, I misread.

I just want to know, when did she ever carry an extra 20 pounds??? :confused3

She never did. I would guess she's talking about her weight via "Hollywood standards" which are pretty unrealistic.

The thing for me is, whether she felt she should have lost her virginity earlier or not, why on earth does she feel like anyone really wants to KNOW this about her? :confused3 Just seems like a "Look at me!!" kind of ploy. Like no one's been paying her much attention lately and she feels the need to put herself out in the spotlight again, no matter what the reason.

Like it or not, people are interested in celebrities. She didn't call a news conference. She was interviewed. She was asked questions that led to this tidbit. A tidbit which surely some people will object to the content of, but those folks shouldn't misrepresent the context of such personal objections.

Unfortunately it's not just celebrities who have this "the world revolves around me" attitude. Look at all the blogs and twittering and people throwing up their personal problems on message boards. It's too bad for her that when she reflects on her choice that she actually describes it with regret based on the belief that she would have loved herself more if she'd been having sex sooner.

Unfortunately you are right, and that attitude is pretty ugly. Additionally, too many people have simply lost boundaries in an effort to draw attention to themselves. No one MADE Ms. Shields answer the question; she did that all on her own.

Correlation? As in a reciprocal relationship? I'd love to hear your explanation.

The message you quoted contains the explanation. (I assume you understand what "correlation" means, and what "causation" means, and the difference between the two.)

My husband says that she looks like a truck driver in drag and she should count her blessings that anyone wants her.

Your original statement states a cause, alludes to an effect, but doesn't really explain why you believe the statement to be true. I was curious to hear your explanation of why you think your statement is valid.

Excuse me, but your prior post explained nothing. You took two concepts/facts and stated that there was a correlation between the two. But you provided no evidence of such correlation, and yes, I know what a correlation is. I also know what causation is. The existence of two separate circumstances or lifestyle indicators does NOT prove a correlation. Or that one causes another. You've simply spouted your theory, which you are entitled to do, but absent more than your opinion, it is ONLY your end thought.
