Here is an evaluation of whether DVC members should rent out their points on their own or via a broker-assisted approach. The article was authored by the owner of a DVC point broker company, yet is surprisingly balanced and fair. What do you think of the article?

Renting DVC: Private vs Broker Assisted

Well Mike, its a nice broad look at renting. Not that I agree with all the points made, but its a start for some who have never done. I think its a little one sided for the broker, IMO. I have done both, and now prefer renting myself. That may be because I have a few people that now call me to rent on a regular basis and it really is no problems.
Going with the broker, I found that the amount of time was equal to renting myself. Having to keep looking at my emails to be one of the first to reply to rent out my points. Since most send out to a net of renters to get the lodging secured asap. With self renting I can put my points up and check once a day (before I had regulars) and see who is interested and meet my criteria.
Maybe I have been lucky, no issues with payment or cancellations.

IMO it significantly over emphasizes the work and aggravation of renting. All of the points are possible but there are ways to easily avoid most of those issues on one's own. But overall a decent look though clearly biased as I read it.

I have rented out my points many times. Each time I found a renter here on the Disboards. I completely disagree that the only options are renting through a broker for less or renting to friends for even less.

FWIW, I don't see a big time savings by going through a broker. You still have to check availability, you still need to make the reservation, you still have to work with them on the DDP and you still need to arrange for ME.

Renting my own points is easy and doesn't tie up funds for months. I get paid more than I get from a broker, sooner, and I don't give myself 1099s.

Besides, I like giving people some pixie dust.

I must say I've developed a number of friends directly from renting but DVC and otherwise.

I'd just like to warn people considering renting points from a stranger. Just within the last month, two renters were scammed on another Disney site which offers a rental board. So, if you're considering renting points from an individual, please read An Explanation of Renting Points.

Mike you are right and that is a correct arrow graph, but. There might have been a few scammers, not just now but over the years. The arrow should be instead of risk, security IMO. There is the same risk from the broker, the security is in the fact that the broker would have to cover the cost for either end if something doesnt mesh. There is always risk to the rentee. The rentor risk is if there is damage. But as far as payment there is more risk on if I the rentor am using a broker. If the rentee doesnt go through, I could only get a portion of the payment and then have my points expire or go into holding. If I am renting private, I collect all upfront, more risk to the rentee, not to me.

I remember an issue last year where a poster used a well-known broker to rent points and DVC "accidentally" cancelled the reservation in July for a stay in October (Food & Wine). Supposedly there was an error in allocating dues and DVC cancelled all reservations on the account. The broker followed his contract and refunded the money. Unfortunately, the poster no longer had a reservation and there was no availability and broker said they could not help. In that case she did get her money back but she still didn't have a reservation.
