How secure are the lockers at DLR?

How much faith do you have in the safety of the lockers at DLR? Our hotel room doesn't have a safe (that I'm aware of), and rather than carry around a large sum of cash with me all day, I'd really, really love to get a locker at the start of each day where we can leave jackets for the evening, dry socks and the majority of the cash we will be bringing for meals, etc.

I've used the lockers before, but never stored anything of any real value in them, so I thought I'd check to see what others have experienced. Would you feel comfortable leaving expensive valuables and / or a largish sum of money in one of the lockers?

Thanks so much!

Main Street just got new lockers. They seem pretty good. I wouldn't leave a large sum in there. If you have to carry cash, I'd do it on my person in a secure place. How about Debit/Credit cards?

what hotel are you staying in? maybe they have some kind of safe deposit box or something at the desk? They had some ones available when we stayed at BWPPI, it was perfect. Check with your hotel. I'd be hesitant to put too much cash in the lockers at DL. Good luck in figuring out something

I would not leave a large sum of cash in the lockers.

Ask at the front desk, as most hotels have a safe for valuables (kinda like a safe deposit in a bank, they give you your own container to put your valuables in and then lock it up in their safe. MUCH safer than those tiny in room safes that pop open if you put too much in, lol).

If you'll be needing this cash for meals, souveniors, etc, then I would suggest that before you leave you put the cash onto a prepaid credit card. Almost every bank has them, and many stores like Walmart, Target, etc. They sometimes cost $3 or $4 but that's cheaper than the lockers at DL anyway. You can use them anywhere that a credit card can be used.....so the only places in DL that won't take them are some of the street vendors, so carry a few dollars in real cash if you use street vendors.

If you're concerned about carrying a credit card while wandering the park....I'll tell you what I do....I punch a hole in the corner of the card (opposite side as the mag strip obviously!) and attach it to my lanyard which I then put inside my shirt. My AP is on that lanyard the same way. Never have I lost my lanyard. My little coin purse was taken out of my pocket once on Main Street, but my lanyard is always safe.

We are staying at BWPPI! ;)

I will talk to the front desk. The prepaid credit card is a good idea too. Thanks everyone!

If most of your spending will be at DLR, you could also turn the cash into Disney Giftcards as well. Either one big one, or split it up into per day, or every other day giftcards.

Instead of cash, we bank with Chase (OK so we banked with wamu, and the fact that Disney has Chase ATMs became very helpful after it changed) and get cash out in that way, or just buy the GCs with a debit card (either Chase or credit union). Just not comfy bringing/carrying/transporting/securing alllll that cash.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. The lockers at the Park are secure (as in, I've used them more times that I can count & nothing's gone missing), but I wouldn't feel safe leaving a large sum of cash in a locker anywhere. Plus, it'd take some chunks out of the day to walk back & forth to the locker every meal time/time one wanted to shop. Plus that, it's easy to budget $ using gift cards, at least for me. I get one gift card for meals and one for souvenirs. Any remaining balance goes towards the next trip!

Keep in mind that a prepaid credit card or gift card, is just like cash. If you loose it, it is gone and you are SOL. If you loose your ATM/Debit or regular credit card there is little liability on your end.

Yeah, this is a given, but since OP carries cash it appears that they don't have a debit/credit card...thus the suggestion for a prepaid.

And also the reason for my suggestion that you punch a hole in the card and attach it to your lanyard. I've been doing this for years with my real credit card and my AP and never lost either.

I agree putting it on your lanyard is a good idea.

But over and over again people suggest GCs instead of cash and I just want people to be aware that it isn't safer.

As the OP asked her question she had a good idea. It follows the well known saying: Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Well, we do have both credit cards and debit cards. But the last trip I noticed that it was way too easy to go over budget with the debit card. I've got Disney GCs for all expenses inside the park, but of course, the restaurants at DTD don't accept them. Hence the cash.

This is thrown around a lot, but it is simply not true -- As long as you keep original proof of purchase, you can call in, report a lost Disney GC, freeze that lost card, and transfer the balance to a new card.

See the FAQ at disneygiftcard.com, where it says "Promptly call 1-877-650-4327 or Contact Us via email to report the card lost or stolen. Your Disney Gift Card will be 'frozen' and funds remaining on the card (at the time of the call) can be transferred onto a new card. An original proof of purchase receipt for the Disney Gift Card is required to transfer the funds onto a new Disney Gift Card.
"

Granted, many people don't make the effort I do, but it really isn't that tough -- we typically travel to DLR with 3 gift cards; I have a printed page that lists the three card numbers and includes copies of the proofs of purchase. That page stays in the hotel room. I have the ORIGINAL receipts at home. As long as I get the card FROZEN when I loose it, I can pull cash from some other source for the duration of my trip, then deal with actually RECOVERING (by transferring to a new card) the remaining balance once I'm home. We're at some version of Disney (DLR, WDW, Cruiseline) at least twice a year, so it's going to be used anyway!

If I loose a card and someone quickly finds it and wants to use it, they can, of course, drain it quickly and then I am, indeed, out of luck. However, if I loose it and it is not quickly found, or someone finds it and just tosses it thinking it is worthless, or if I just discover it missing faster than anyone else finds it, I can freeze it and recover the funds.

Not super safe, but absolutely untrue to suggest it is just like cash, loose it and it is gone.

So how is it now? What I said is true, practical and good advice. You like anyone else can take it or leave it.

It's practical advise, but it certainly is not true.

Not sure what you mean by "how is it now".

In any case, like DISNEY says, the gift card can be frozen and replaced if lost. Cash can't. Sorry - not the same.
