Now, Speaker Pelosi is number 3 in the government, in line of succession after the VP. Rice is next. Want to guess how she travels? If you said frequent flyer miles, you are way off.

Read this, down towards the bottom of the first page:

So, it's okay for the number 4 person in gov to have their own plane, but not the number 3?

What kind of car does the White House janitor drive...if it's new it must have been funded by the Republicans...who cares who flys what...I just wish the planes landed in Washington a little bit more so they could get some work done:lmao:

A. I don't see anyone (well, nearly anyone) arguing that Sen. Pelosi shouldn't be assigned a plane for her travel.

B. I'd venture a guess and say that the Sec. of State position probably requires a lot more travel than the Speaker of the House.

First, I don't believe that Secretary of State Rice is next behind Speaker Pelosi. I believe that the President pro tem of the Senate is next in line.

Second, Speaker Pelosi's position in the line of Presidential succession does not make her the "number 3 person" in the government.

Here it is in order:

# Office Officer
1 Vice President and President of the Senate Dick Cheney
2 Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi
3 President pro tempore of the Senate Robert C. Byrd
4 Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
5 Secretary of the Treasury Henry M. Paulson, Jr.
6 Secretary of Defense Robert Gates
7 Attorney General Alberto Gonzales
8 Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne
9 Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns
-- Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez

-- Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao

10 Secretary of Health and Human Services Michael Leavitt
11 Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Alphonso Jackson
12 Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters
13 Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman
14 Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings
15 Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson
16 Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff ††

You are right about Rice being number 4. She is 5th. It's debatable on what we mean by number 3 in the government. Since being behind the VP for succession some can certainly make a valid point that she is number 3.

As Bob said above, the SecState position requires MUCH more travel than the Speaker. So I believe that would be the justification.

Good post. I may copy it for another thread.

OMG, she should be protected if for no other reason than to keep that old byrd out of the White House :rotfl2:

She should receive the same plane that the previous Speaker did. I'm sure that they would likely change her refueling stops regularly so I don't see how it is so unsafe!
