How safe is to send personal info (like CC#) through email?

I know it is not the best method, but is it really that dangrous to send information such a cradit card numbers through email?

I try to avoid it, but have done it in the past.

I 'disguise' the number by inserting text, i.e. 1234remove5678this9012text3456. This should prevent a scanning program from seeing the card number.

I would strongly advise you NOT to send credit card numbers through email unless you are using encryption like pgp. If someone needs your credit card, it is best to call them if you can't encrypt your e-mail.

It is not safe at all. Email thru the internet travels as plain text (typically) and can be read by anyone who has access to the server. Don't do it. If you need to get the information to them, call them on the phone.

Not to mention anyone sniffing the network. I'm in network security so I see the real ugly side to the internet :/
