I'm trying to figure out how many points I need to buy. We go to WDW every other year although I foresee a few situations in the future where we will go skip a year (making it 3 years between visits).

Let's say I have 2009 points. How long can I bank them for? Do they expire after one year in the bank?

You can bank any or all of your annual points from a use year into the next use year but then they must be used in that next use year and cannot be banked again. Thus, e.g., if you have 2009 use year points and bank them, they must be used during your 2010 use year or be lost. The maximum amount of points you can possibly have for use in one use year are three years of alloted points -- those from that use year, those banked from previous use year and those borrowed from next use year. Obviously, if you bank you are giving up use of those points in the current use year so you can use them in the next, and if you borrow you are giving up use in the next use year so you can use them the year before.

If you want to see usual points you will need any particular time of year for each resort go to the "DVC Point Charts" link at top right of this page.

You can bank current year points into the next year. If you do not use them in the next year they expire. You can also borrow points from the next year but if you do not use them then they expire. It is really very simple. Say, for example, that your use year is 2010. If you are not going to use your points in 2010 then you can bank them to 2011. If you do not use them in 2011, they are lost. You could bank them to 2011 and borrow your points from 2012 also and have a real super vacation in 2011! The banking/borrowing process is one of the best things about DVC.
