Just curious!

How much would/did you spend? or would/did you receive? (approx. if you don't know) :)

Thanks!!

Only spend what you can without taking out financing. It is not the size or the cost of the ring that counts but the heart of the person giving it.

As much as I or my partner could afford. I also wouldn't be opposed to getting a dummy ring until we could afford a "real" one.

My DH was 19 when he bought my ring. He spent $1200, which was a fortune to him at the time. I still love it, not because of it's economic value, but for what it means to us.

I have heard the rule of thumb is three months' salary, but for many people. that is still way too much.

And thank you for changing your title. I thought e-ring was some internet lingo I had never heard of before. :goodvibes

I think I spent $3,500. Fortunately for me, my future FIL had a good deal with a great jeweler in town, so I got a $7,000 ring for that price. :)

Are you sure? I thought it was one months salary...3 months is OUTRAGEOUS. OTOH, if it is true - can you find me a link so I can show DH that he's got some shopping to do.:rotfl:

My ex gave me the receipt for insurance purposes - it was $1000 for 1/2 carat. And you know...I don't even really like diamonds! If I ever get engaged again, I found a really lovely opal that I like for about $250.

A male friend of mine told me that he sold his car to buy his ex an engagement ring. I told him he was crazy. He agrees (since she's his ex-wife now)!

My engagement ring was $120 after taxes :O)

It is a beautiful 24K band with a huge amethyst in a tear drop shape. With a couple little diamonds on the side. I do NOT like diamonds, and we were young. DH asked me what kind of ring I had in mind for when he was going to propose, and I said a gemstone (I kind of remember a huge sigh of relief, LOL!). He got amethyst b/c we got engaged in Feb. I wouldn't change it for anything :)

Mine 20 years ago was $2800 - it is a sapphire with surrounding diamonds

My best friend 2 yrs ago $8000 (some fancy designer ring)

My Brother 2 years ago $2600

I agree to go with what is affordable but I also think a little investment can go a long way.

My Matt put my ring on laway lol for about 4 months. The jewler was very kind and had a soft heart for romance. He paid around a $1000 for it but because we were dating long distance and trying to save up every little dime to move me to him, he had to find a compromise. I never even knew he had a ring until he got down and proposed lol.

With all that being said, I wouldn't spend more than I could afford and certainly would stress that when it was time to have that talk. It really is the love not the ring that matters, well to most. A friend of mine took her man's credit card and bought the diamond she wanted at a diamond market.

My original engagement ring was $19.99, - *chuckles* The next time I get married, I told my DBF I don't want a ring (I don't wear jewlery) I'd prefer a new car. He agreed.

LuLu - do you and Robbie have something to tell us?!! ;)

I never got the draw about wanting an expensive and huge rock. It just seems like a waste of money to me.

i found my dream ring. at the end of the day it would cost between $9000 and $11,000, depending on how well negotiations would go between the jeweler in the diamond district my my SO.

When's he's ready, of course.

my engagement ring 11 years ago was around $500! We were young, didn't have a lot of money, we didn't want to spend years paying off my engagement ring, but I only wanted a small solitaire diamond anyway. For our 10th anniversary, my DH surprised me with the most gorgeous 3 diamond anniversary band in platinum. I know it cost over $5,000, but I don't have the guts to ask him just how much it was! I don't really want to know! :rotfl2: Honestly, I love my new ring, however, I was much more comfortable wearing my $500 ring!

All I can say is...don't spend more than you can afford! I have heard of people who put their girlfriend's engagement ring on credit, and then spend the next 10 years paying it off! And if she insists on something ridiculously expensive that she knows you can't really afford, I would really think things over!!!! I used to work with this girl, she was 21 years old, her BF 22, and they talked about getting married, and she said that if he showed up with a dinky little engagement ring, she'd say no! She wanted one that was $10,000! I felt really bad for her boyfriend!

Haha. Now you know why I call myself the most overplanned unengaged future bride in the world!

Actually, two of my friends were recently engaged. One's ring was about 8,000 and the other's was 19,000. I thought, surely 10,000 plus can't be the average ring price these days!
