I have rented my extra points out several times for $10 per point. Many people who rent points will make a reservation for the most popular times (such as Xmas) and then sell it for much more than the typical rate, usually a lump sum. If you are interested in Xmas for 2006, it will be tough to come by and probably expensive. Hope that helps--

What are the points and where do you rent them? I've heard them referened often... Sounds interesting.

"Points" refer to the Disney Time Share concept, or DVC. Instead of buying a certain week, members buy points. Different times of the year may be more or less point, and different accomodations would follow suit. Points can be rented from members- see the DVC rental forum for more information!

The question is:

"...how much to pay for points for sale from DVC members?"

The correct answer is:

The price the owner sets:confused3

Unless it's indicated that the price is negotiable, why do people think they can haggle with the owner/seller?

Not flaming the OP, would advise a visit to the DVC boards for info.

how many points is it for one night?
Depedns on which resort what type of room and what time of the year you want to stay. The price varies.

Watch out renting points can get you addicted, I did and now own.

how do you get points to rent?

Check out the DVC forum, they have a sub group where folks list points for rent. It's a great way to stay at a fabulous resort for a great price. The definitely provide a wonderful service.

WARNING: The following is book knowledge only, I've never done any of this myself.

DVC, Disney vacation Club, is a time share situation. When someone buys a DVC time share, what they are really buying is a certain number of points per year for a certain number of years. The minimum number of points that a new DVC owner can buy from DVC is 150 points per year. The number of years is non-negotiable, it is already pre-set, most DVC properties until some time in the 2040s and SSR until some time in the 2050s.

So a DVC owner doesn't buy one week per year of use or two weeks per year of use, they buy a certain number of points. How they use those points is, with a lot of exceptions of course, up to them.

So let's say a DVC owner wants to spend a week at Old Key West in a studio room. For a week in value season (like mid-September), it will "cost" 8 points per day for weekdays and 20 points per day for weekends, so a week will "cost" 80 points. For a week in holiday season, December 25 through January 1, the "hottest" week of the year, it will "cost" 15 points per day for weekdays and 36 points per day for weekends, so that week will "cost" 147 points. If you think about it, it makes perfect sense -- those of us who pay cash to stay at the resorts know it costs more to stay there at the more popular times versus the emptier times.

So, Disney thinks it's perfectly cool and legitimate for DVC owners to rent out their points to non-DVC folks like us. It's a private transaction between you and the DVC owner. You can find DVC owners willing to rent points in several places, including DISboards. You and the DVC owner agree on the price per point. You pay the money to the owner, not to Disney. The owner alerts Disney of the transaction, so they know it'll be you staying at WDW during that time and not the owner himself/herself.

So let's say I bought into DVC and I paid for 250 points per year. Let's say I use only 100 points this year, or let's say I use none. I may want to rent out my excess points and make some money. It makes me happy because I can get some extra cash, and it may make you happy because, generally speaking, the amount of money you'd pay to rent DVC points is less than you would pay Disney to stay at that exact same resort or a resort with similar amenities.

There are MANY details I've left out here, but now you've got the main idea ... I hope.

That's a pretty good summary Cleve. We have rented some of our points in the past. Basically we put a post on the Boards under DVC with points to rent. Usually the going rate is $10 per point. The points per night change per the time of the year you want to go, also by the resort and the type of room. Usually Sun-Thurs are one rate and then Fri-Sat are more. We had the person renting the points send us a money order and then we faxed them the reservation and had Member Services change the name on the reservation.

Now the going rate to buy points is somewhere around $95 per point. Next time you go, check out DVC. They will pick you up at your resort and bring you to the models at SSR. You can finance the purchase through Disney (and it does not show up on a credit report) over 10 years. Minimum points to buy is 150 for the initial purchase. When we bought several years ago we were able to sell back our first year's points in lieu of a down payment. Since then we have purchased 3 more times. We have points at BWV and HH. We have not been to HH yet, but it has the lowest maintenance fees.

I hope this helps.

the going rate is $9 to $14 per point.

BCV is very, very popular - still the most popular of the DVC resorts. So if you want something for this Christmas you are probably too late.

of course one of the reason it is so popular is that pool.... December can be iffy for the pool... So if the DVC member wants a premium price - I might reconsider my choice.

now this resort can't be beat in the summer and fall - but with December it could be too cold to use that pool. So why stay there?

but place an ad and see....

oh don't let anyone rent your points - you need a reservation if they can't get you the reservation you need - then go elsewhere - or change your time.

points won't do a non-member any good at all.
