I may start to watch a newborn in my home. It would be about 4 hrs/day - 3-4 days/wk. What is the going rate now days? When I watched a toddler a few years ago, the mom paid me $30/day - for about 8-9 hrs. Thoughts? Would $20/day be reasonable?

Are you certified? Do you have children at home? What is the going rate for home daycares in your area? That's all stuff I would look at when trying to find childcare for my two. The home daycares that are certified near me run between $100-$150 a week for full time care and they are certified and in the USDA program so that includes their food.

Five dollars an hour for an infant? No way, Jose. Your time is worth a lot more than that.

I live in a low COL area and I think $20 a day is shockingly low. Don't underestimate the amount of care/time infants need. :)

I think $35-$40 a day would be more appropriate.

$20 a day is very reasonable. I live near a woman who keeps kids ALL DAY LONG for $20 a day!! But for 4 hours I would pay $20 a day. Infant care usually costs more than toddler care.

But you may want to ask the mom first how much she planned to pay before you lay a price out there. She may shock you and say $30 or $40 a day and you don't want to short change yourself. I would ask her first and if she says less than $20 a day I would pass on the child care situation but if she says $20 or more than you are good to go.

this is a very regional question.....you have to call your local daycares and ask for prices and use that as a guide.

I stopped working 10 years ago....I went part-time for about a year before...I paid a day care center 888.00 a month for 2 kids...one toddler and one infant...for 2 days a week. I am sure the price is much more than that now!!!

I preferred a day care and not home care, (not the issue here), but home care came at a premium for those who wanted it, so also consider that when giving a price.

Around here, $12-15/hour for care outside of a daycare setting.

No way would I do it for $5 an hour! Why should you make less than minimum wage? I would charge at least $10 an hour and I think at that, she is getting a very good deal.

This is so geographic - that'd be $20/hr., not /day around here.

If it was 1 on 1 and at the infants own house I would agree. Private nanny care is totally different than watching a child in your own home, being able to do your own housework, have your kid at home (since OP has a 1 year old I'm assuming the 1 year old will be at home too). I'd never pay that $20/hour for someone to watch my kid AND their own kid at their own house.

ITA with it being regional. When I still lived in California 10-15 per hour was the norm (12 years ago). I now live in MT where the working mom makes anywhere from 8-18 per hour. No way could they afford more than min wage.

I agree, call around to see what others are offering for prices. Then, charge a bit less- since you'll be doing it in your home. $5 an hour seems a bit small of an amount in my opinion, but like others have mentioned- it's hard to know because every area is different. I would never go below $30 a day, simply because infants are a lot of extra work, they take up more 'one on one care time' than a toddler or older child.

I wouldn't go by the day I guess either, I would go by the hour. Just in case mom is running late once and a while, or if she works longer or shorter amount of time some times. I don't think $7.00 to $8.00 an hour is unreasonable, but then again I live in a smaller community in the midwest. In California, New York or other areas that would never be reasonable at all...

Thanks for the thoughts. I will definitely have her throw out a number first. It would be at my home and my 1 yr old would be home with me :thumbsup2. I may call around to see how much infants are around here too.... I know on this side of the state (W MI), it is much cheaper than the other side of the state near Detroit!

Try Craigslist...I would get rates for my area from there or atleast numbers. I am a home daycare provider andI charge $185 full time for an infant. Full time is 3+ days a week and/or 4+ hours a day. I dont think asking $20/day is too high I would do $25 though.

I wouldn't do it for less than $6 an hr minimum (I live in MI too). I would ask the parents how much they were looking to pay. I had a friend pay me $8 an hr to watch her newborn in my home part time (I had an almost 2 yr old). That was 10 yrs ago and very generous.
