We are thinking of visiting DC in February. Thanks to info on a previous post, I think we will stay at Loew's L'Enfant Plaza. How much time do you suggest we spend there with 2 boys, 11 & 13? We were thinking 4 nights, does this sound about right? Any other tips or suggestions? Thanks for your help!:D

A week would be ideal, 4 nights would be sufficient. Lowes L'Enfant Plaza is a great hotel and the one I always recommend to people coming into town. Get yourself a metro pass when you get here so you can ride the subway all day for one price.

I can give you about a billion tips, but I'll let you tell me what you want to know. I live here in D.C. so I can probably answer any questions you have.

Hi!
DH and I just stayed at L'Enfant Plaza...very convienent to the Metro, nice hotel. We only stayed 3 days/2 nights and could have used at least another few days so 4 nights should be good.
If you have any questions feel free to PM or email me.

DC is a great place! We spent 8 nights and still didn't see everything. Your boys would like the air and space museum, and a tour of the FBI building, go see where they print money (I can't remember what it is called). Also see the statue of Iwo Jima, I couldn't believe how big it is. We went on a tour of the White House which was nice. Arlington cemetary is very interesting, but I would only go if the weather is mild, plan on a full day there. The Smithsonian is wonderful too. Make sure to see the Vietnam memorial, it is very, very moving.

There is so much to do that I would definitely plan. There is an Unofficial Guide to DC that might be helpful.

I think the Air & Space Museum and the Museums of American History and Natural History would be interesting to your sons. I don't know if you can still tour it but the Capitol is a fascinating building and the Library of Congress is beautiful. I didn't enjoy the FBI tour as much as I expected to but your sons may like it. The zoo and National Cathedral are outstanding but I'm not sure if they would be interested.

At any rate, have a great time!

I think four nights for your first visit is
fine-you'll want to go back for sure.
Depending on how you think your boys
will respond-the Holocaust Museum is
very powerful. Also, so many Smithsonian
to see-Natural History, Air and Space, Hirshorn,
American History, Hall of Presidents. We really
like the Phillips Collection up off Dupont Circle-
it's a wonderful small private museum with loads
of great Impressionism in their permanent
collection and usually a good temporary exhibit
for family viewing-nothing too heavy in other words.
Dupont Circle is a great area for eating too-we
stay at the Radisson Barcelo there, the rooms are huge and
we can often get a $99 rate(they have Nintendo on
their TV's ). Don't mean to skew your plans
about hotel but there's much more
to choose from around there to eat.
We liked the National Arboretum for something different
and I second the recommends for the FBI and the Mint.
National Archives would be a must IF they are done with
the renovations. There's an ON and OFF Bus Tour that
sells all day tickets including lots of the sights not central
to D.C. We visited the Kennedy Center last time-check
for their entertainment schedule-they often have free
concerts/shows on Sundays. That was interesting. Grand
Central Station is worth a look-it was restored recently and
it's a fairly easy walk to the Capitol from there if the weather
is decent. Grand Central also is a good lunch stop. Also-in
good weather, you'll want to allow time to walk the entire
"mall" which includes Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Wall, Korean
War Monument, Womens War Memorial and the Washington
Monument, the Reflecting Pool, original Smithsonian Bldg and
the Capitol Bldg-not in that order. And you thought WDW was
a lot of walking!:D

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions! We were originally planning 4 nights in DC, and 2 in Gettysburg on the way home. Maybe we should spend all 6 nights in DC and save Gettysburg for a later time? Actually, the Radisson Barcelo was another hotel I was looking at, both are in my entertainment book for this year, hoping they're in the 2003 book also! I hadn't thought of touring Arlington. I have an uncle buried there, so maybe it would be worth a visit.

Thanks again for your help, I will definitely pick up a touring guide!

Please keep in mind that the White House tours are now closed to all but scheduled school groups. The FBI tours have been closed indefinitely. Something new to check out (which I've heard it really neat) The Spy Museum ( http://www.spymuseum.org ). This just opened a month or 2 ago. There are so many things to see in DC, you'll have a great time.

Yes, Tina is correct, no White House or FBI tours anymore. :( The FBI tour, in particular, was such a good one.
