How much snow does it take to snow you in?

My DD does go out to play (in her matching ski bunny parka and snow pants) and insulated boots and waterproof Columbia gloves and a fluffy hat. She lasts about 20 minutes and comes in for a warm up (tea, cider, etc) and then she's out again. She's smart enough to come in before something freezes.

I remember living in Winnipeg when I was 8/9 years old. My mom would take us tobogganing when it was -40 with the windchill outside.

As soon as a flake has fallen from the sky I'm in! I do not drive in the snow. I grew up in the bay area, so we do not know what snow is!

Not much. A few inches and I'm in until it melts. I used to work for a brokerage firm, and they'd charge you if you didn't come in on snow days. I didn't want to give up my hard earned vacation in January/February, so I'd drive then. But now, I'm a SAHM, and I figure the roads don't need one more person who can't drive in the snow on them!

Our county only has enough snow plows and salt/sand to do the main highways and a few of the major county roads. School may be called off with just a few inches of the white stuff. The rural roads are just too slick.

We live in Arlington(an hour North of Seattle) and have approximately 7 inches of snow and schools been closed for the past 2 days we didn't have school on Monday or Friday either for teacher in-service days so we now have a 10 day break. I know on Monday when all this snow came into play the city was a nightmare. We have family friends who live across the street who are pilots and it took the husband 6 1/2 hours to just get out of Sea- Tac and to a hotel 5 miles away. So I would say not alot of snow shuts us down. I also think Snohomish county has more like 10 snow plows considering the fact all the major roads are all plowed in our neighborhood and around us. We live in Arlington's golfing community but I know they plowed other neighborhoods since I saw them. It's snowing again right now and is supposed to rain tommorrow I think were in for a mess

Nor would any amount of manual control help all those people that were trying to get up the off ramps, and just slid back down sideways.

Yes, it's always interesting to watch the footage of the SUVs etc. deciding to go up or down the steepest Seattle hills on the news. I usually feel bad for people who are stuck driving in those conditions. (getting myself home from work last Monday was no picnic) However, some of hills in certain neighborhoods there is really no excuse to try to navigate. They simply flat out refuse to believe they can't do it.

Here in Seattle if you don't start heading home as soon as you see the first snowflake you are in big trouble! (And I am not exaggerating.)

I learned this lesson in the 1990 storm when my mom was in Seattle and it started snowing took her all afternoon/evening to get home. The only reason she made it was someone helped her get her car safe and drove her home.

In 2005 I went into Overlake Hospital with my children. It was sunny and snow was not supposed to happen. I came out an hour later and it was snowing lightly. I got on 405 and it was stopped. I literally watched the roads ice over as I tried to drive home. I left Overlake at 4. Stopped at Redmond Town Center for dinner at 6 (maybe 5 miles). Sat in front of the Redmond Inn for 3 more hours (less than a mile). Finally gave up. Luckily I was able to get to my dad's house. Only took me another hour (11pm by now) to get to my dads (2 miles away). My son (3 at the time) was screaming "GET ME OUT, GET ME OUUUUUUUTTTTTT".

Not a pretty sight.

Snow- we're from Minnesota!
kids LOVE snow! I remember growing up blizzard of 76- no power for almost a week- all the "cold" stuff from the fridge got put outside in the snowbank! and everyone slept upstairs near the fireplace. all us kids were outside playing in the snow all day having a ball
my kids had a few snow delays. plows needed a little extra time to clear the streets.
Washington- doesn't really get snow except in the mountains- it's ICE- I hated driving in that state!
now we are in Texas, so it's already 70 degrees! I actually miss the cold weather and snow (I know, I'm crazy!)

On Monday, my DH's boss took 5 hours to get from the International District to Burien... and he abandoned his car and walked the last few miles.
