As some of you know, my GIZMO is at the Vets, and I believe my bill will be over 500.00! Would YOU put out that much, or more to save your pet? Thanks!

I have before and would again - in a heartbeat!

As ***********, I have spent that much and MUCH more in the past and would again.

a thousand dollars in one month.........when we knew that she could not live a great and wonderful loving and carefreel life with us......we then knew that all the money that we would of put into her care and love......would not had been enough........
I wonder now if we are going to do another doggie.....Jasmine was so much a part of our family.....and the heartbreak of losing her is still fresh in our minds

We just put our dog to sleep last week. Our bill? $625 and no dog to show for it. I would spent a large amount of money within reason-especially if it was a curable illness! Unfortunately ours had cancer, he was almost 10 and I would never opt for chemo!

When our dog was diagnosed as a diabetic, he was only 10, almost 11 years old. We spent lots of money on lab work to monitor his blood sugars, when he went into a diabetic ketoacidosis, we spent lots of money on an overnight stay, IV hydration, round the clock care, etc. They told me how much it would cost, and I wrote the check.

However within a month, he went blind and one of his eyes had a cataract that bulged through causing the eye to become necrotic. He couldn't find his way around the house, he was becoming incontinent, and was basically a vegetable. And who knows if he was in any pain from the eye, animals are very stoic! No amount of money was going to improve his quality of life and we put him down. :( It was the hardest thing I've ever had to do.

I think each animal's circumstances are unique. Only you know what is the right thing to do.

Lots of times we put off the inevitable, and I can certainly understand why. :(

We spent about $2500 to have a tumor removed from my DH's dog just after we got married. The dog died about 6 months later, and if I'm being honest I have to say that I don't think I'd spend that much again, particularly for an older animal. I've pretty much decided that my cats will have all of their routine care, and will have any broken limbs mended and infections treated. Beyond that, I think nature will have to take its course. I love them, but I'm not going to jeopardize my family's financial health.

Yes, if you believe it will enhance your pets quality of life. I spent hundreds of $$ on my cat last year when she was diagnosed with cancer and even though I started her on chemo, it was already too late. In hindsight, if I had to do it over again, I would have put her down, but we really didn't know how sick she was. I don't regret spending one penny of it even though she is gone.

There would be no limit, ever.

Never ever.

If money could have ever been an issue, I would have left my pet at the store.

Yep. I have spent much more than that in the past.

It's a personal decision, but not one you should feel guilty about.

I agree Blondie! Each pets circumstances are unique. In our case, we never knew he had cancer until the day he actually got sick. That day we found out he had brain cancer, lymphoma and lung cancer. It's amazing how resilient animals can be. The day before, he was jumping gates!

When I was 13 our 6 year old german sherpard got hit by a car, of course it happen right in front of me. I can still see it and hear the sounds. Anyhow she lived and only had a broken hip. So my parents decided to save her, All I can remember was that she was in alot of pain and was not the same dog and after about 3 or 4 months she didn't get any better and had to be put down. I don't know what was harder when she first got hurt or thinking she would get better and then another let down. I've had many cats and only a couple dogs since then and they all lived a long and wonderful life. But after my last cat (15yrs old) was put down 3 years ago i haven't gotten anymore, it just hurts too much.

Dcg, I know how you feel, but you get back from pets so much more than you give. I couldn't imagine my life without the unconditional love of a dog(or cat for some). Lifes greatest rewards are those given by taking risks!

I think I’d be willing to spend quite a bit of money, since I can’t imagine just letting one of them die if I could prevent it. I mean, if I had a choice of my cat dying or giving up a couple of trips to WDW, it would be a no-brainer. (Hmmm, wait… let me think about that for a minute) ;) I agree with Addicted_to_WDW that age would be a factor, and what their quality of life would be. I think my sister goes a bit overboard; she recently spent close to $1000 on a vet bill for a rabbit (and it died anyway).

I guess I'm in the minority but I wouldn't spend a lot of money to save our pet, not any more. The decision is hard, I've been there and I've done it, spent more money than I should trying to save a pet.

Its a personal decision.

Just wondering does anyone here pet insurance? Maybe that could be a new thread or survey? I see alot of ads for it.

I would spend whatever I would need to to save them if they were able to save them with the procedure.

Our ER bill was about $1400 when our puppy ate some of our other dogs' medication. Didn't have to think about it, I did question whether some of the tests needed to be done but wouldn't have been comfortable not doing whatever needed to be done. He was only 6mths old and in good health otherwise so that was also part of it. The effects of not treating might not have killed him but could have caused other health problems.

I might not spend as much on an older dog, our border collie died not long ago and I wouldn't have spent major $$ to try to extend her life. She died before I got her to the vet so I didn't have to make a choice.
