We have just started investigating price quotes for ds 16. He has inherited an old cadillac from deceased fil. The ins. co. told us not to put him on our policy, but it would be cheaper to put him in an assigned risk pool, with no collision for $2,900. Plus our own ins. would go up $200. Does this seem reasonable? Wow, all I can say is glad he has a summer job.

HOLY COW!!! That sounds very excessive!!:(

Our DD is now 18.5 years old - and when she was 16 she bought her car all by herself - a 1995 Chevy Lumina. For the past two years she had full coverage on our policy at a cost of $1600.00 per year. Last month she dropped the collision and now pays $800.00 per year, again, on our policy.

I would get some quotes from some other companies.

I should add that our part of the country is way at the top for the most expensive insurance rates. So that might factor into it too.

My 17 year old sons car insurance is about 140-150 per month. He drives a 1993 truck and we only have it covered for liability. Our area is one of the highest rate areas in Tx. I dont understand why your insurance co. would have you get him his own policy and then also charge you an additional 200 .....that doesnt make sense....If he is a minor and / or dependent and has an accident your insurance is liable (the way i understand it)..so what would the purpose serve by getting him his own policy??..Our carrier insist that any licensed driver that is a dependent in the household be insured on the auto coverage. Did you ask what the cost would be to add him to your policy without the other policy they suggested?
Oh by the way my son pays half of his insurance.....Our oldest, now 26 also paid half of her insurance when she started to drive. Any cost for traffic tickets and rate increases due to traffic violations or accidents is also at their cost.....My dd never had a mishap....although she did get a speeding ticket while in college and couldnt believe we expected her to pay it.....that was her one and only tic to this day..... and ds is doing well also...

Here is my3kids, wheezing, freaking out, holding her head reading these costs since she has a kid near to driving age.:scared:

NJ is famous for its high auto insurance rates. DD20 is on our policy and the total for her coverage (including collision) is $1579. She has a couple of small discounts for driver training and good student.

I'm sure the rate for DS will be much higher when he gets his license at 17.

My 16 DS just got his driver's license on Monday. I've been praying A LOT this week!!!! He has a 93 Chevy Mark III conversion van and it cost $180 to insure for 6 months added to our policy before he got his license. Now our policy went up $450 more to add him on as a driver for six months. He is going to pay $105/mo. He has a job and can swing the payment now. I don't know what will happen if he gets a ticket or has an accident....

when our DS lived at home, our insurance guy (my cousin) told me to get him an old car in his name and just have him on his own policy. The reasoning behind it was, if something were to happen and we were to be sued, our name wouldn't be on the car, just his. If he were on our policy, we could be sued along with him. I know our car insurance just took a major leap and its just my DH and I on it, so maybe thats why yours went up too.

I'm with you my3kids. AAACCCKKKKKKK

My dd is 16 and just got her license. She will not be driving alone until Aug. She will be at summer camps until Aug 2. I told her I would not pay insurance for the 6 weeks she would be at camp if she wan't driving. I'm a horrible mom-sigh- oh well. Looks like not paying for 6 weeks will save me a bundle!!!!

Car-1986 Nissan-$400.00
Insurance-Massachusetts minimums: $1100.00
Cost for NOT having to drive her around: PRICELESS! :teeth:

Mine is a little over $600 for six months. This is on a '97 Ford Explorer registered in my mom's name. Because there are now 3 cars on the family's insurance we get a multi-car discount. This is in addition to my good student discount, my drivers ed discount, and the good driver discount we get. However, we do expect the insurance to go up a bit, if things ever get straightened out between our insurance company and that of the kid who hit me, since by law the accident was my fault. Unfortunately they don't usually take common sense into consideration, which would then tell them it's his. I have collision, liability, etc. My car was insured the same way all the other cars were in my house. And it's registered in mom's name for both the insurance and the actual registration-because that makes insurance cheaper.
