After reading all the threads lately on taxes, I started wondering what the average american gets in a refund yearly. I just read an article that says the average refund is $2,000. I'm surprised so many people get so much money back!

I realize this is non scientific, and only gives me a feel for the average DISer but I'm curious. If you haven't filed, use last years number.

Anyway, I'm posting an anonymous poll. Feel free to comment.

We have had to pay for the past seven years...ever since we got married, it seems. We have no children, and don't claim any dependents. We have a few deductions, such as my student loan interest and the things I buy for my classroom. But we still pay. Maybe we're doing something wrong? Or maybe that's just the way it is.

I don't like to get a refund, but I'm hoping I plan a little better this year so that it doesn't pinch so much next April. ;)

But we're planning to buy a house this year, so we may just leave things alone and get a bit of a refund next year.

$7470 WITHOUT EIC. I just had to toss that in there. Hubby works a lot of overtime and it's taxed at a higher rate, plus we have extra taken out each week. We claim not married with 0 dependents too.

My refund this year is pretty good.. but not much of it is EIC.. My refund each year is pretty decent.. Most of it is that I claim 0 and I have extra taxes taken out so that I can get the refund.. I know how I am and I would end up spending the money if it was in my biweekly check so I like getting a refund check each year so that we can vacation..

Last year--we had to pay several thousand dollars (DH is self-employed and made more money in 2004 than he expected--not good about doing his quarterlies) so this year we've had LOTS of extra taxes taken out of my pay check, plus DH has been VERY, VERY GOOD about paying quarterly taxes.

We will just have to wait and see what our accountant comes up with! The taxes are too complex for our puny brains to figure out (my job, plus DH's schedule C business, plus my schedule C business).

Two of my co-workers were in the same pickle last year--our office manager (married to a self-employed real estate agent) and a physician (married to a self-employed veterinarian). Misery loves company, so we had some nice little chats about our tax bills! :goodvibes

Wow, I'm surprised! So far, 33% are not getting a refund but owe taxes instead. Based on the posts I've seen here I thought it would go the other way.

Keep voting!

We don't have everything in yet (W2s, house interest, etc.) so haven't filed yet. Hope to do so very soon though.

We get a decent refund every year - enough to sock quite a bit away for retirement, put some aside in regular savings, money towards our vacations & we'll sometimes get something for our house.

We both own our own businesses, and we make sure that we pay more than enough taxes so we don't have to pay at the end. The most we've ever to pay is about $400 to the state, which just about killed me - I HATE TO PAY!!!!

I'm getting about $1400.00 back from state and federal combned. I claim 0 and had a few good deductions. Single w/o kids, so I was pretty lucky this year.

I'm getting my W2's on Tuesday, but based on my last stub from 2005 and help from H&R block.com, I should be getting back around $3800 federal and state combined thanks to both my property tax and morgage interest I can deduct, plus having them take out more each check then normal. Last year I got a $2000 refund, so by adding the property tax deduction on I'm getting $1800 more than last year.

I haven't finished with all of our deduction yet but so far we are getting back over $5,ooo. :cool1: This is our way to save enough for visiting the mouse :mickeyjum and do a little home improvement.

We are getting $8600 back from federal and got $1100 back from state. Most of the federal is overpayment of Social Security taxes when DH switched jobs, nothing we could do about that. The state, which we usually pay about $200 into, is mainly because we bought DS a trombone last year and the twins started the saxophone and MN has a deduction for such things.

DH just did a rough draft and it's going to be around $3000. It just means we've been overpaying, but we rather have them take out more than owing money. This time of year is hard enough with real estate taxes coming due in February.

This is the first year that we are going to have to pay. :( The past 19 years though we have gotten back under $1.000.00.
