How much is too much to pay for a CASUAL outfit? (UPDATED)

I won't pay more than $20 for jeans, I think it's silly to pay more than that... but I was raised with budget minded parents that felt that designer clothes were not worth the price tag, and other things in life were more important... like traveling to WDW =). You can still dress incredibly nice and even wear designer clothing at a fraction of the cost if you put your mind to it.

So even if we were making big bucks, I would find myself still combing those sale racks because I think its a waste to spend more than I should on clothing (or anything else for that matter), since there are bigger and better things to blow money on! like more trips to WDW!

So to me, I have never spent more than $50 or so on a single outfit, because I've never had to. But everyones priorities are different, and pocketbook =) We're broke, so no clothes for me for awhile =)

Depending on who you talk to I'm either a complusive shopper, really cheap, or a fantastic bargain shopper.

I have 2 closets full of clothes. I have 3 plastic bins of clothing under the bed with seasonal clothes (lots of christmas stuff) and then I think 6 more bins of clothing that's 1 size too small (was several sizes too small last year, so I'm closer at least!). I also have many bins of clothing in the garage, just waiting.

Having said that - let me price out the outfit I'm wearing now for you:

Tan/black animal print shirt with handkerchief-style sleeves and black lace - $12. Tan faux/washable suede pants: $6.99. Tan real suede boots: $19.99. Total price for outfit including boots: roughly $39.

About 3 months ago I bought the most expensive pair of jeans I've ever bought - they were 19.99.

So when I saw the question, before looking at the prices in the poll, I was thinking that hmm, for a good casual outfit, I think the most I'd pay would be $20-$25. I still stand by that.

Of course I have formal gowns that I bought for less than $25. And in the too-small bins I came across a pair of pants I hope to wear around christmas that I bought on sale. Original price was $154, I paid $3.99.

This (below) is $120 (from the same store). Again, if I had the $$ to spare I would get it and wear it as often as possible. I could most likely wear it to work (we don't have a strict dress code and they actually think most of my fairy/medieval style stuff is really cool )

To me, these things are not stuff you could get at the local mall. I wouldn't pay alot for something at the mall, because that stuff ALWAYS goes on sale and most of it is not really my style anyway.

Are these the costumes you were referring to? Do you go to a lot of costume parties? They look like some kind of wizard clothing. I have never seen that around here.

Skiwee, she said upthread that she likes fairy/medevil style clothing.

I think they are all beautiful. I wish I could wear that style, I'd look like a dork in them, but I think they are very pretty for Esmerelda. She is young enough to pull it off with style.

Not really costume parties, but a lot of Renaissance faires etc. The costumes I was referring too are actually a lot more Renaissance looking than these, though.

This stuff is actually stuff I'd wear to work, with the possible exception of the middle dress (which IMO is too overstated for work - though my job encourages people to express themselves and there are no real dress codes , I personally would feel weird wearing the middle one to work).

$10. I'm not kidding!! I shop at the consignment store, on Ebay, and at another thrift. I wear mostly Talbots, but I will occasionally wear Ann Taylor or Lilly Pulitzer too. I could never pay retail for clothing again. Most of the stuff that I get looks brand-new. I know that this kind of shopping is not for everyone, but it's the only way that I can afford a knockout wardrobe from my favorite stores!

I thought so. My oldest DD, 21, would love them. What kind of work do you do? DD sells cellphones and I don't think they would like her in those clothes! LOL!

You are just the opposite of me. I don't have a lot of clothes. What I have I love and wear over and over. I definitely would spend $70 on a pair of jeans! But I only own two pair.

Not me! I'd never spend 50 on jeans but I do wear almost entirely "good" clothing...Lauren,juicy, halgen, lucky, polo, gap, banana republic, ann taylor, etc. Of course I'm a bargin shopper and if I buy something full price...which is rare...I have no problem buying it once on sale and then returning it with my original receipt! I can't do ebay or consignment...it freaks me out..wearing clothes worn by people I don't know...YUCK! I do sell my used clothes though...ironic? I think 70 max on a casual outfit...unless I knew I would really wear it and love it!

Totally depends... I just dropped a lot of money on a sweater twinset that I had my eye on, and my jeans aren't cheap. I would LOVE to only pay $20 for jeans again, but to get the fit and feel of some that I like, I wound up paying more than that. I just buy less of them. Work clothing I am willing to spend more on since that's what I wear most of the time. Usually I comb the racks and find some great sales so I rarely pay more than about $10-20/item myself.
