How much is too much to pay for a CASUAL outfit? (UPDATED)

Not including shoes - just a bottom and a top - how much is too much to pay for one CASUAL outfit?

Like something you would wear on the weekends or after work/school.

(heck - my jeans cost more then $50)

can you tell i'm trying to justify a "splurge"? heheheh

Depends on the outfit

Unless it's more of a costume than an outfit, I'd say $39.99 would be my max. Maybe $45.

I don't think I have ever spent $50 one a top and bottom or a single dress (excluding costumes for Ren Faires)

Depends on what the outfit's for. For something casual, I'd day $100 but for something formal, you might have to pay $200

I just ordered something online. It was $59 for the skirt and $54 for the jacket. I would normally wait for it to go on sale, but I'm afraid this will be gone. I normally won't pay that price.

Oh! Now I see it says casual. Well, for shorts and a shirt I'm not paying $50. LOL! For jeans and a shirt I might. But not more.

I do have to say that this is $90 and I'd consider it, if I had extra $$ to spare because I know I'd wear it alot.

This (below) is $120 (from the same store). Again, if I had the $$ to spare I would get it and wear it as often as possible. I could most likely wear it to work (we don't have a strict dress code and they actually think most of my fairy/medieval style stuff is really cool )

THIS is $140. I asked for it for my birthday (my parents usually spend more than that one me, despite my asking them not to, so I figured I might as well ask for something I really like. My mom loved it so hopefully, in Nov. this will be on me!) Again, if I had the $$ myself, I'd have this now.

To me, these things are not stuff you could get at the local mall. I wouldn't pay alot for something at the mall, because that stuff ALWAYS goes on sale and most of it is not really my style anyway.

The more I think about this thread the more I realize I fibbed in my original answer.

I'd never pay more than $25 for jeans but that's just me. I'd consider pay more than $30 for a really nice top/skirt if it was very unique and not something that was sold all over the mall. Of course, if it was something nice, I had some extra cash and I really liked it, sine I don't buy clothes, like EVER, I'd say go for it.

The outfits I showed above all came from a catalog I subscribe to. I love all three of them and really, really want the top one for work in the summer and spirng and the bottom one (it's black velvet with silver dragons embroidered on it) for the winter. (and yes, I'd wear that to work and on possibly on weekends )

To me, these outfits are not going to go out of style. I've been dressing like this since I was in junior high school and if I see something different and "me" and it costs a little more but I know I'll have it for a long, long time, I see no problem in buying it.

But I do it so rarely, that it just seemed natural to me to say under $40.

I like plain velvet flat dress shoes like these (only not in bright purple!)

Or lace up boots. My absolute most favorite shoes I have are my black velvet lace up boots. My mom got em for me last Christmas, as I would never have actually coughed up the $70 or so to buy shoes for myself.

The ones in the pic above run around $10-$15. Very cheap and comfy.

I think that how much you pay for clothing is totally related to how much money you budget for clothing, which is related to how much disposable income you have at the end of the month. I don't have that much disposable income so I wouldn't spend as much as others on clothes because my clothing budget isn't that large. Pushing it I would be willing to spend $100 on a great outfit but it would have to be something that was nice casual (vs. sloppy casual) that I could wear to church on wednesday nights, or to summer parties that friends have and feel like I looked great. The vast majority of my casual clothes are much cheaper than that though. I usually spend $20-50 per outfit (top and bottom or a dress). Dress clothes usually cost more unless I find a good sale or something.
