I did a test and found out our home is high. What can I expect and how do I find a legitimate contractor?

We had a mitigation system put in years ago & it was several thousand $$'s. We only had 1 company in the area so...

I live in eastern PA, where radon is very common. My sister had one put in before she and her DH bought their house 2 years ago, we believe the owner paid around $900. My brother did one in the house he just sold a few months ago, it cost $800-something. There are lots of contractors who do it here, and I think there is a state certification to look for.

We put in a radon mitigation system two months ago and it was $880. We live in Colorado.

We had one put in before we moved in to our current house. Ours was around $1500, but we had them run it through our garage and that added to the cost. We are in Colorado.

We had a mitigation system put in when we bought our house 5 years ago and I believe it was in the $800 range, not sure as the seller did it as part of concessions. We are in Colorado....looks like there are several of us that have done it on this board.

How do you know you need it? Who does the testing for it?

It also depends on whether the piping is already there....newer houses usually already have the piping installed (at least in areas where radon is generally a problem) and only need the fan for minimal money.

I think our system was $1,200 as an active system. An active system just means you have a built in fan in the pipeline that helps draw more air/radon out from under your house. We had the system installed as our house was being built. We also have a sub pump included in the system that has some kind of drain that lets water and air in but not out which is pretty cool to me. The system keeps levels below 1. One day our radon detector started beeping and we watched the levels climb to 10, 20 30, all the way up to 50 with all house windows open and these reading were on the 2nd floor. Our active fan died. Fan replaced and levels dropped below 1 again.

You can find out if your house has radon by ordering a radon detector that plugs in and looks kind of like a carbon monoxide detector. Or, you can buy one time use (cheap) at your local Lowes or Home Depot.

Western New York here, 18 months ago , seller installed as part of contract , approx $1300.

Ours would have been $1200 but we paid $400 more so the pipe would be in a less conspicuous place. They wanted to put it right at the bottom the our basement stairs and in the way of carrying large things down the stairs.
To find a contractor, I think I would call a realtor I trusted.
