I have this stuffed peppers recipe I want to make. It calls for a "bunch" of cilantro to be put in the mix. How much is a bunch? :confused3

A whole bunch? That's a lot of cilantro and would overpower any dish. A bunch would be the bundle you buy at the store. Cilantro is an assertive herb, add it to taste. Or not at all if you don't like it.

I agree - you would 'never' use a 'bunch' of cilantro in one dish. Stuffing bell peppers, I would never use more than 1-2 tablespoons fresh chopped, but that's just me as I don't like the 'over powering' taste to be the dominate flavor.

I know what you mean by using too much of it. I did on one of my recipes recently and it DID overpower it.

I usually pay around $1 for a bunch. For stuffed peppers I would just use parsley or skip it all together.

I buy the bunch in the store and chop about 2 tbsp. for any recipe that uses cilantro. Start with only 1 tbsp. first though - for some folks that is enough.

Make sure you pull the leaves off the stem before you chop them up. Those stems taste yucky. (Giving this advice in case you've never chopped up fresh cilantro before.)

LOL I was just at Walmart and a bunch was $0.98, but now that I read the other replies I don't think that is what the op meant.:P

I came across this on yahoo answers: I always refer to The Herbfarm Cookbook for measuring questions because Jerry Traunfeld has spelled it out so well. In this case he says a small bunch is equal to "A small handful of sprigs, a little less than an inch in diameter, three to four inches long and about one-half ounce by weight." A large bunch, "A medium-size handful of sprigs, about 1 1/2 inches in diameter and one ounce by weight." Also, DLH, as a general rule, I would never use equal amounts of parsley, rosemary and sage in a recipe. Rosemary and especially fresh sage are so intense they are bound to conflict and overwhelm.

Just another word of warning if you don't normally eat cilantro. For some people, it tastes like soap. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/20/cilantro-aversion-gene-study_n_1901124.html?

Ugh yes this. I despise cilantro. I got a Thai pasta dish the other day and it was covered in it. Even one little strand made me gag. I didn't realize they were calling it chinese parsley on the menu or I would have not gotten it lol. It's interesting there could be a genetic link. I remember doing the genetic test for whether you're a super taster in high school and I wasn't. But kale and cilantro just ruin any food for me. Interesting stuff!

Cilantro tastes like soap to me. The first time I bought fresh salsa with cilantro in it I threw out the whole thing because I thought I'd left soap in the bowl when I washed it.
