How much for sewing

If you have someone willingly and able to meet your timeline, then $25 is a great price. You never know when you will need her again.;)

I agree with this. This person volunteered to help you out...it is not the same as having someone who does this as a business. And she is doing it quickly. $20 - $25 sounds right to me, then use the badge magic or glue in the future.

(BTW, glad to hear about the badge magic...dd will be starting brownies this year. I can sew, but hate doing stuff like this!)

$25 is a great price.

I once had a friend have patches sewn on by a tailor but they were put in the wrong places. I fixed them for him.

If a local scout shop will do it for $1 each that's great. Ours did not sew on patches.

The badges can be ironed on but it is more difficult to get them straight than it appears and many people guess wrong as to the correct placement. Getting the council patch correct on an eased sleeve cap is especially difficult. All the patches do need to be sewn on and hand-sewing by Cub Scouts is probably not possible due to the thickness of the material. The iron-on or fabric glue will not hold up to active boys, repeated washing, and tugging at shirts.

I use a fabric glue stick to glue them on - but just long enough to hold them in place to sew them. This is much easier than trying to pin them on and then sew (either by hand or machine).

We have a lady in town that charges $1 each to sew patches on and she does a TON of business. You do need to give her at least 3-5 days to get it done.

$25 seems extreme, I'd say $10 at the utmost.

If your son is a new scout, he likely has the council patch, the troop number and the purple Scout insignia that goes over the pocket. FYI, ask your seamstress if she could please use invisible/clear thread if she has it. It looks the best.

DD13's Cadette troop sews on patches for area scouts (boy and girl) as a fundraiser--they charge $2.00 a patch with a minimum order of $5 (meaning if you only have 1 or 2 patches you still have to pay $5--since half the work is in getting out the supplies). Many people round up and give them more as it is their fundraiser:goodvibes

I think $25 is totally reasonable - $20 would be OK as well.

I've learned to value money a little less than people's talents/abilities, their craftsmanship, and skill.

If after 2-3 stitches you were ready to rip up the shirt and the patches - I would say go with your original instinct.

Our society has become so accustomed to the disposable, and 'what I want - when I want it' mentality that quality craftsmanship has fallen by the wayside.

I live in a state where a good deal of people still earn a living by working with their hands, and skilled craftsman are provided a place to showcase their works in a museum quality retail environment. Are their wares expensive? YES some are VERY expensive, can I afford to buy what I would like to have in my own home? NO

However, just because I can't afford something doesn't mean that it isn't worth the price on the tag.

Sorry to get on a soapbox here - but it drives me crazy when people under value the work that others do by hand.

Something I challenge a lot of folks to do is this:
Take your salary BEFORE taxes - and divide it by the number of days a year you are paid - Include paid annual leave days and holidays - AND sick leave.
When you have figured out your gross daily wage (if you are salaried) ask yourself...

Am I worth that amount to my employer? If I were the business owner - would I pay someone that much a day to do my job?

Put things in perspective - value the work of others! Whether it's sewing, cleaning, yard work, landscaping, or anything else physical or skilled labor.
Be fair - you would expect the same if you were on the other end!

$20-$25 is a very fair price - especially since she is doing it so quickly for you and your son!

Once again - sorry to get on my soap box!

Our scout shop charges $1/patch to sew them on. But since they're doing this as a favor and they're doing it quickly I'd say $20 is not an unreasonable amount - it's what you'd give as a GC if they did something else for you that was really nice.

I'd say right now you have the Council Patch, the purple Fluer de Lis and the Troop Numbers. You should have or will soon have another patch to sew on soon - his Den #.

Just a thought with the Badge Magic vs. Sewing vs. Glue:

I've got three boys in Scouts and DH and I are both leaders (8 years in scouting and counting) - can I tell you I've sewn a ton of Scout patches onto Scout shirts/sashes and I definitely don't recommend doing anything permanent - When they start to grow you'll want/need to move the badges from the old shirt to a new one - the shirt is expensive enough without the added cost of new patches . (Oldest DS is a Star Scout and has had 5 or is it 6? shirts so far). While not all badges transfer from one level to another some do - the ones you've just mentioned in particular and you can save probably $10-20/shirt (depends upon if you pay for replacement earned badges or if you can get extras for free from your pack) if you can transfer the patches as opposed to buying new. Badge Magic and Sewing will allow you to save money by transferring the patches but glue won't.

ETA - I'm awards chair for our pack - earned patches cost $1.79/each.

I still stand by $10 being a very fair price. Not only does it require minimal time and effort with a machine (yes, I sew, so I know), but you really don't even know if the work will in fact be quality work. As far as a fast turnaround goes, I would hope that someone volunteering to do a maximum of 10 minutes work would be able to get it back to you promptly.

For those who want to sew the badges/insignia, I've found that setting up the machine with clear thread on top and the bobbin thread to match the shirt/uniform/vest makes the whole process a lot easier. You can sew all the patches, no need to keep changing the colors, and the underside matches the shirt, vest, etc so it looks a lot better.

I like the idea of the fabric glue, with a few stitches in each corner to hold them down. That's what I always used to do when I had patches to put on :)

That is a great idea!!!

that is a lot of money to pay someone. The store that sold my son's uniforms would sew on the patches for $1 each. And they knew exactly wear to sew the patches on the shirt.

Would love to know where I can get them sewn on for $1 each for my GS. Do you have to buy the patches there? Our leaders pick them up with dues. I'm thinking you may go to the same store as we would based on your location. Thanks for any help.

Good time to earn the sewing badge.:lmao:

I completely agree! I'm amazed at how many adults(women especially) can't sew. I learned when I was a little girl.

I'm not criticizing though. Since I sew, and I have done sewing jobs for other people before. I think $3/patch is fair. So I think $15 is fine, unless you fee comfortable giving her $20 because she is doing you a nice favor and doing it quickly (like a tip).

The Hobby Shop on Rte 34 in Matawan/Aberdeen. That's how much I paid the last time I was there. Probably last year. and we didn't buy the patches there, the leaders gave them to us.

If you are considering donating your shirt to your Pack/Troop when you child has outgrown it, badge magic and the other items can ruin the shirt. Pack number and council flag , as well as one world purple patch (pruple knot that goes over your heart) can stay on, but if you put on your Den specific badges with it and you donate it....The badges for the earned levels and arrow points need to be removed and they leave a big white spot and the shirt is effectivly ruined. Stiching is the prefered method.

Joanne, Thank you! That is where I figured you were going and that is where our leaders go. Maybe I can get my daugters vest to look like it should. I just have to figure out which patches are hers and which are from when she was a brownie or from her sister. :confused3
Thanks again, Donna
